Supervisory Certification Program
This certification program provides new or experienced supervisors with the tools and skills necessary for building personal confidence in their leadership role in the workplace.

Tours of local businesses and insight from business leaders are integral parts of this program. Upon completion of this program, participants will receive a Supervisory Certificate from CVCC and 6.4 CEUs.

Registration is $850 and includes all materials.

Module 1: Role of Supervisor and Change Management
Change management will focus on the methods that supervisors can use to handle company changes such as acquisitions and down-sizing. It will include how to transition when promoted from shop floor to supervision. Tips on how to handle stress that may result from these types of challenges will also be discussed. Format for program will be reviewed with participants during this session. This session will be held at Catawba Valley Community College.
Module 2: Communication in the Workplace
Included in this session will be a discussion on verbal and written communication, how to communicate upward in an organization, communicating with peers, and communicating with direct reports. Appropriate supervisor conduct and work day dress will be included. Host company will have a management representative talk with participants for 10-15 minutes. Representative and/or class participant from host company will tour class through facility.
Module 3: Performance Appraisals, Constructive Feedback, Rewards, and Recognition
In this module, participants will discuss rewards, recognition, and constructive feedback. Performance appraisal techniques will be covered. Participants will receive a copy of Perfect Phrases for Performance Reviews by Douglas Max and Robert Bacal. Host company will have a management representative talk with participants for 10-15 minutes. Representative and/or class participant from host company will tour class through facility.
Module 4: Time Management
In this highly interactive module, participants learn new skills to increase their productivity while decreasing their stress levels. Participants will learn ways to save time, money, and effort by working smarter instead of harder. During this module, participants build expertise in improving productivity in 4 of 18 high-impact topics and identify additional topics to explore on their own after the workshop. Participants will receive a time management manual. The host company will have a management representative talk with participants for 10-15 minutes. Representative and/or class participant from host company will tour class through facility.
Module 5: Employee Relations and Law
The instructor will cover the requirements regarding documentation, legal issues encountered by supervisors, and review of a generic employee manual. Basic policies and reasons behind policies will be included, as well as how to handle “certain” employee situations. The host company will have a management representative talk with participants for 10-15 minutes. Representative and/or class participant from host company will tour class through facility.
Participants will take the Meyers-Briggs Type Indicator assessment to determine leadership/personality style. Discussion will center on how different styles of individuals make decisions, communicate, and handle conflict situations. Discussions will include techniques and tips on how to interact with individuals with different styles or “difficult” people. Management representative from host company will talk with participants for 10-15 minutes. Representative and/or class participant from host company will provide tour of facility.
Module 7: Financial Overview for Non-Financial Managers
This module will cover the basics of finance in a “user-friendly” format. Included in the discussion will be a simple example of shop floor financial information. For example, costs associated with scrap rates, materials used, labor, and equipment maintenance/energy usage will be incorporated based on the companies represented by the participants. This session will be held at CVCC’s Manufacturing Solutions Center. This module will also contain an open forum for participants to ask questions to a panel of business leaders on any topics as they relate to leadership or management.
Module 8: Coaching, Mentoring, and Counseling
Included in this module will be the discussion of coaching, mentoring, and counseling in a team-based environment. Coaching and mentoring will be discussed using the leadership perspective of supervision. Counseling will review the perspective of both leadership skills, as well as managerial skills. Representative and/or class participant from host company will tour class through facility. This session will be the final session and the graduation. All companies with participants will be invited to the graduation. Participants will give a short presentation on how they are going to apply what they have learned from the session. Session will end with a presentation of the certificate to each participant and a photo of the participant with 2-3 business leaders. This session will be held at Catawba Valley Community College.
