RACE AND POLICING
IN APARTHEID SOUTH AFRICA AND 21ST CENTURY AMERICA
In Apartheid-era South Africa, race touched every issue, including enforcement of the law. This presentation will examine how race issues and the formal racism written into the laws of South Africa influenced police practices. It will also compare and contrast those practices with how policing is done in present-day America, especially in the wake of 2020 protests over the police-involved deaths of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor.
