Computed Tomography
Registered radiographer, nuclear medicine technologist or radiation therapist are eligible to apply to the Computed Tomography program.
Program Information
The Computed Tomography (CT) at Catawba Valley Community College is a nine month program that will provide the registered radiographer, nuclear medicine technologist or radiation therapist the didactic and clinical experience to become a registered computed tomography technologist. All didactic courses are online; with the clinical portion of the program meeting face-to-face at an assigned clinical education setting. Days and times vary depending on the site. Completion of the program will meet the structured education requirement hours to sit for the ARRT exam. The student may need to complete additional hours to complete all required ARRT competency requirements. Students must pass all three parts of the curriculum with a “B” (80%) to pass the program.
Admission Requirements
Students must meet the following requirement for admission to the program:
- ARRT (American Registry of Radiologic Technologist) registered in Radiography, Nuclear Medicine or Radiation Therapy or NMTC (Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification)
- CPR certified (American Heart Association)
Admission Process
- Complete appropriate Continuing Education Application for Computed Tomography and return to the Radiography Program Director.
- Include a copy of current CPR card with application.
- Once admitted, submit to criminal background check and drug screen with CVCC’s designated provider. The student will incur the cost of the criminal background check and drug screen initially and additional screenings incurred while in the program. Information obtained in the criminal background checks and drug screenings could jeopardize the student’s ability to participate in the clinical portion of the Computed Tomography program and will result in the student’s inability to complete the program.
With the goal of entry-level computed tomography skills in mind, the student should be capable of performing the most basic CT Procedures at the conclusion of this program and clinical experience. Those procedures include but not limited to:
- CT Head
- CT Soft Tissue Neck or Cervical Spine
- CT Chest with Contrast (Routine or Trauma)
- CT Chest with Contrast (Vascular Study e.g. PE, CTA, or Aortic Dissection)
- CT Abdomen and Pelvis with Contrast
- CT Abdomen and Pelvis without Contrast (Kidney Stone Protocol)
The clinical experience requirements for CT consist of procedures in six different categories:
- Head, Spine, and Musculoskeletal
- Neck and Chest
- Abdomen and Pelvis
- Additional Procedures
- Image Display and Post Processing
- Quality Assurance
Candidates applying for the ARRT certification exam must document the performance of complete, diagnostic quality procedures according to the requirements in the ARRT Computed Tomography Clinical Experience Requirements Handbook found on ARRT.org. Students completing the CT program at CVCC are not guaranteed to meet all of the ARRT clinical requirements. Additional clinical/scanning time may be needed to meet clinical/exam requirements to take the ARRT certification exam.
Class Offering
Students are required to meet criteria for admissions through the approval of the Radiography Program Director.
