College Transfer at CVCC
CVCC is a great place to start a 4 year degree!
NC community colleges and the public university system in NC have signed a statewide
agreement governing the transfer of credits between the community colleges and the universities in NC. The
purpose is the smooth transfer of students. The agreement has been signed by the Board of Governors of the
University of North Carolina (for all 16 schools) and the N. C. State Board of Community Colleges. This
Comprehensive Articulation Agreement (CAA)
provides specific assurances to transferring students. Various transfer options are outlined below.
Why begin at CVCC?
- It costs a lot less. You can take the freshman and sophomore years of a bachelor's degree at CVCC
and save thousands of dollars compared to starting at a four-year college.
- You will not be sacrificing quality if you come to CVCC. Catawba Valley Community College is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award Diplomas and Associate Degrees. Contact the Commission on Colleges at 1866 Southern Lane, Decatur, Georgia 30033-4097 or call 404-679-4500 for questions about the accreditation of Catawba Valley Community College.
- You usually receive more individual attention in your freshman and sophomore years at CVCC.
Typically, CVCC classes include 30 or fewer students. Many universities run freshman-level classes
with 100-300 students. Some university classes are taught by teaching assistants. At CVCC, you are
taught by faculty members, not assistants.
- Our emphasis is on you, the student. Many large universities require faculty members to do
research in their field. CVCC exists for only one purpose: teaching. While some of our faculty members
do research, it is not a job requirement.
- Transferability. Institutions that are part of the University of North Carolina system and many
private NC colleges will accept CVCC associate degrees granted in 1999 or later as equal to the
freshman and sophomore years at these schools. This agreement
(Comprehensive Articulation Agreement) means you should be able
to transfer into these colleges and universities as a junior. See your academic advisor or student
services for details.
- Our graduates who have transferred to four-year colleges tell us what a great job we did. They had
the preparation and self-confidence to do their best. Today we count among our alumni several teachers,
a lawyer, and a speech pathologist, to name just a few.
- You don't have to leave home to attend CVCC. Many recent high school graduates don't feel
comfortable living far away from home. CVCC allows you to get used to college life before you move out.
Older students often find it difficult or impossible to take classes far from home. CVCC can help you
get started while staying close to home.
- You'll be surprised how many of your friends you will find at CVCC. Many recent high school
graduates come to CVCC. Even if you have been out of school for many years, don't worry. You'll find
other students your age in class. Your dreams are the limit when attending CVCC!
Transfer Options
- Associate in Arts (AA) or
Associates in Science (AS) Degree
- Successful completion of a "transfer" degree will allow you to transfer, upon
acceptance, as a junior with 64 semester hours, to any of the
16 UNC campuses or
18 private schools.
- The Comprehensive Articulation

- CVCC offers both the AA and AS degrees and 17 "
pre-major agreements"

- All schools have a"core" or general education requirement that all students must complete.
- CVCC's Core consists of 44 semester hours in English, humanities, social science, math, and science.
- Successful completion of CVCC's 44 hour core will meet core, general education requirements at all 16 UNC schools and the 18 private schools.
- General College Transfer Courses
- Our "college transfer" courses can usually be transferred to any college anywhere.
- The CAA contains a list of the General College Transfer Courses
that will transfer to the UNC system and participating private schools.
- Most 4 year schools in NC can provide you with a list of community college courses that
they will accept.
General Education Core Courses
Within the overall total, the community college system and the university have
developed a general education core transfer component. This curriculum reflects the distribution of
discipline areas commonly included in institution-wide, lower division general education requirements for
the baccalaureate degree. The general education transfer core includes study in the areas of humanities
and fine arts, social and behavioral sciences, natural sciences and mathematics, and English composition.
Within the core, community colleges must include opportunities for the achievement of competence in
reading, writing, oral communication, fundamental mathematical skills, and the basic use of computers.
Students must meet the receiving university's foreign language and/or health
and physical education requirements, if applicable, prior to or after transfer to the senior institution.
The semester hours credit distribution of the general education core by area is as follows:
(The specific courses to meet the CVCC core are
listed after the general requirements)
- English Composition (6 Semester Hours Credit)
- Humanities/Fine Arts (12 Semester Hours Credit)
Four courses are to be selected from at least three of the following discipline areas: music, art,
drama, dance, French, Spanish, interdisciplinary humanities, literature, philosophy, and religion.
At least one course must be a literature course. (3 hours in
Speech/Communication may be substituted for 3 hours in Humanities/Fine Arts. Speech/Communication
may not substitute for the literature requirement.)
- Social/Behavioral Sciences (12 Semester Hours Credit)
Four courses must be selected from at least three of the following discipline areas: anthropology,
economics, geography, history, political science, psychology, and sociology. At least
one course must be a history course.
- Natural Sciences/Mathematics (14 Semester Hours Credit)
- Natural Sciences (8 hours): Two courses, including accompanying laboratory work, must be
selected from among the biological and physical science disciplines (astronomy, chemistry,
geology, and physics).
- Mathematics (6 hours): At least one introductory mathematics course (college algebra,
trigonometry, calculus, etc.) must be selected; the other unit may be selected from among other
math courses.
The specific CVCC core and courses that can be used to fulfill requirements in each of
these areas are identified below. These courses are drawn from those courses designated in the NC
Community College Common Course Library as being appropriate as part of a general education core transfer
curriculum. Course descriptions for all courses can be found in the on-line CVCC
catalogor the
NC Community College Common Course Library.
