Emerging Leaders Scholarships

Catawba Valley Community College is dedicated to providing quality educational programs for the total community. Because trained, dedicated leaders are so crucial to the future of our democratic society, the CVCC Foundation, Inc., established the Emerging Leaders Scholarship to enable and encourage students to develop their leadership potential. The future rests with people who are prepared to lead and to serve.

Description and Format

The Emerging Leaders Scholarship Program recognizes students who are presently leaders in their school/community and/or demonstrate potential for leadership.

Scholarship Award

The scholarship will pay for tuition and fees for an academic year (Fall and Spring semesters). The recipient may apply for the award for a second year. Factors to be considered will be academic record, participation in the monthly seminars, and involvement in other school/community activities.

Criteria for Selection

  • The primary consideration in selection will be the student's demonstration of leadership potential. While academic achievement is important, it is not the primary criterion for selection.
  • The student must be planning to pursue a degree at CVCC on a full-time basis, commencing with the Summer or Fall classes following graduation.

Commitment

Student recipients must accept the commitment to attend a monthly leadership seminar through the CVCC Rotaract Club. These seminars will be offered on a set date each month. At each seminar, a leader from government, education, or the community will address the student group. Monthly programs may include the following topics:

  • Self-assessment
  • County economic leadership
  • Public school leadership
  • Family goals and leadership
  • Civic leadership
  • Preserving the past
  • National leadership
  • Diversity awareness as a leader
  • International business as a leader
  • Leadership in the next century

Scholarship recipients will be asked to serve in leadership roles and volunteer for a specific number of hours to help with various events on or off the campus. Other opportunities for student participation may be provided.

Application Process

Applicants will be asked to complete the Catawba Valley Community College Foundation, Inc. Scholarship Application form. Upon completion of the scholarship form, the student must talk with his or her Guidance Counselor regarding interest in the Emerging Leaders program. The Guidance Counselor will provide the student with an Emerging Leaders Application.

Upon receipt of the aforementioned, Guidance Counselors are asked to select the Emerging Leader that will represent their high school for an interview with the Emerging Leaders Scholarship Committee.
