NEW CHOICES: STRATEGIES FOR SUCCESS

(A Program for Displaced Homemakers)

• Are you a homemaker who is now looking for work outside the home?
• Do you need to improve your skills or further your education to get the job you want?
• Is your current means of support near its end?

If you answered “YES” to these questions, you may be able to get help through the New Choices program!

Who is a Displaced Homemaker?

NC General Statute 143B-394.4 defines a displaced homemaker as an individual who meets all 3 of the following criteria:

1. Has worked in the home providing unpaid household services for at least 5 years;
2. Is unable to secure gainful employment due to lack of training/experience, is unemployed or under-employed; and
3. Has been dependent on the income of another household member but is no longer adequately supported by that income, is receiving support from a spouse but is within 2 years of losing such support, has been supported by public assistance as the parent of minor children but is no longer eligible, or is within 2 years of losing such eligibility.

• Job Preparation (job search, resume writing, applications, interviewing, etc.)

New Choices: Strategies for Success is operated by Catawba Valley Community College and is funded through a grant from the North Carolina Council for Women and Domestic Violence Commission.
