Welcome to Mathematics
Mathematics is the tool specially suited for dealing with abstract
concepts of any kind and there is no limit to its power in this field. -Paul Dirac
There is no branch of mathematics, however abstract, which may not
someday be applied to the phenomena of the real world. -Nicholas Lobachevsky
The Mathematics Division offers courses designed to meet a variety of student needs.
Developmental courses will help the student review and improve skills necessary for success in curriculum
courses. Additionally, some of these courses may help the student fulfill prerequisite requirements for
admission to a degree program.
Several courses are designed to meet the requirements for Certificate and Diploma
Programs in the technology areas of Air Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration; Automotive Systems;
Electrical / Electronics; Electronic Servicing; Machining; and Welding.
Those courses required in Associate Degree Technical Programs will help the student
master the concepts necessary for careers in Business, Engineering Technologies, Environmental Life Science,
Furniture Technology, and Health and Human Resources.
Courses are also designed to meet the needs of the student enrolled in a College Transfer
Program. Upon successful completion of the Associate of Science, Associate of Arts, or Associate of Fine
Arts degrees at CVCC, the student may transfer as a third year student to a branch of the University System
of North Carolina.
Each of these mathematics courses carries semester academic credit and has been chosen
from the Common Course Library which was developed by community college instructors from North Carolina.
Course names, numbers, and descriptions are designed to be consistent at each community college and should
transfer from one community college in North Carolina to another with a minimum of difficulty.
The Mathematics Division at CVCC currently employs seven full-time mathematics
instructors and a full complement of adjunct instructors. The credentials of these instructors are the same
as those required to teach first- and second-year mathematics courses in the University System of North
Carolina. Additionally, many of these instructors hold Master's Level licensure to teach from the Department
of Public Instruction of the State of North Carolina. Many of the instructors have also completed or are
currently engaged in advanced course work in mathematics and/or adult education.
