Mission, Goals, and Objectives
Mission
The mission of the Radiography Program is to prepare individuals to function in the professional medical community as entry-level radiographers certified by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists. This five semester, Associate in Applied Science program will offer opportunities for students to acquire the necessary knowledge, skills and attitudes required to use radiation to produce images of the various organs and systems and to provide safe, effective patient care.
Goals
The purpose of this program is defined by the following goals:
- To graduate students with the necessary theoretical knowledge and practical skills to competently and safely function as entry-level radiographers.
- To provide students with experiences that develop the patient care and communication skills required for professional practice.
- To provide learning experiences that enable the student to develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
- To graduate students who demonstrate the expected ethical standards of the profession.
- To provide the health care community with entry-level radiographers skilled in diagnostic radiologic science.
Objectives
Upon completion of the program, the graduate will:
- Provide basic patient care and comfort and anticipate patient needs in a variety of clinical settings.
- Practice good radiation protection for self, patients, and others.
- Use medical imaging equipment and accessory devices within the safe limits of equipment operation.
- Competently perform a full range of radiologic procedures on children and adults including head, neck, abdominal, gastrointestinal, genitourinary, musculoskeletal, chest, breast, trauma, bedside, and surgical.
- Exercise independent judgment and discretion in the technical performance of medical imaging procedures.
- Demonstrate knowledge of human structure, function, and pathology.
- Demonstrate knowledge and skills relating to quality assurance activities.
- Evaluate medical images for technical quality and make appropriate corrections when necessary.
- Demonstrate knowledge and skills relating to medical image processing.
- Demonstrate knowledge and skills relating to verbal, nonverbal, and written medical communication in-patient care intervention and professional relationships.
- Support the profession's code of ethics and comply with the profession's scope of practice.
- Use problem-solving, critical thinking, and communication skills in the performance of radiographic procedures.
