SkillsUSA Chapter Members Attend World Leadership Training Institute
Members of the college’s SkillsUSA chapter recently attended the 2018 World Leadership Training Institute in Washington, D.C.
Nick Joyner, SkillsUSA Postsecondary President, and Tyler Brown, SkillsUSA North Carolina President, who attend both Catawba Valley Community College and Western Carolina University, attended the conference. They were accompanied by Gary Muller, CVCC’s SkillsUSA Chapter Co-Director.
At the conference, SkillsUSA provides advanced training for students and advisors that focuses on professionalism, communication and leadership skills. This training allows members the opportunity to share their SkillsUSA and career and technical experiences with federal elected officials.
Activities included congressional visits, a tour of SkillsUSA’s National Leadership Center, and guided tours of Washington, D.C., including the Tomb of the Unknowns at Arlington National Cemetery.
Joyner led several different training sessions and Brown earned the prestigious National Statesman Award for his leadership work.
“This was a unique experience for Nick and Tyler, and they represented SkillsUSA, Western Carolina University and Catawba Valley Community College very well,” Muller said. “These young men have been involved in SkillsUSA activities for a number of years and their successful career development can be traced directly to their involvement in SkillsUSA activities.”
The purpose of SkillsUSA is to help prepare America’s high performance workers for career and technical programs. SkillsUSA is a partnership of students, teachers and industry working together to ensure America has a skilled workforce.
CVCC’s SkillsUSA Program is funded through the generosity of the CVCC Foundation, Inc. For more information about CVCC’s SkillsUSA team, contact Muller at 828-327-7000, ext. 4672, or email email@example.com.
