Shuford Federal Credit Union Scholars 2018
Julie Sandel, Willie Gordon and Cameron Barkley, students at Catawba Valley Community College, recently received the Bruce A. Blackburn Scholarship through the CVCC Foundation, Inc. The scholarship honors Blackburn’s service as chairman of the Shuford Federal Credit Union board of directors and his passion for investment in education.
To be eligible, students must possess the potential for a successful college career, exhibit a desire for academic excellence in his/her chosen field and exhibit academic achievement and financial need. The recipient must also have a grade point average of at least 2.75 at the end of the first semester in college to continue receiving the scholarship.
Sandel is a stay-at-home mother who began volunteering at her children’s school and realized it was time to fulfill her dream of becoming a teacher. She is enrolled in the Early Childhood Education associate degree program and has earned high honors last semester. She intends to graduate next May and hopes to teach at a local elementary school.
Gordon is studying business and plans to transfer to a four-year college to play baseball at the Division 1 level. In high school, he was a member of the National Society of High School Scholars and Mu Eta Sigma Math Honor Society. He also won top honors at the Veterans of Foreign War National Voice of Democracy contest.
For the past three years, Gordon has coordinated volunteers to work with Sports Made Possible, a Colorado non-profit that helps disabled children play adaptive baseball. He has led his teammates to serve at Baseball Night at Children’s Hospital Colorado as well as Operation Christmas Child Packing Party.
Barkley is enrolled in the associate degree program and plans to transfer to Appalachian State University to earn a bachelor’s degree in secondary education. At Bunker Hill High School, he was a member of the National Beta Club and National Technical Honors Society and served as captain of the football team.
He is an active member of the youth group at Emmanual Baptist Church where he has participated in mission trips to South Dakota, helped build playgrounds and volunteered with Operation Christmas Child.
