Foundation Endowment Benefits Construction Academy
The Dennis L. R. Starnes, Sr. Scholarship Endowment established through the CVCC Foundation will fund textbooks for students entering Catawba Valley Community College’s new Construction Careers Academy starting this month.
The endowment was established as a memorial to Mr. Dennis L. R. Starnes, Sr., founder of Starnes Construction Company of Hickory. This is the first CVCC Foundation endowment to assist individuals who want to prepare for a career in the construction industry.
A life-long Catawba County resident, Starnes passed away in 2002. He exemplified excellence in craftsmanship as a Master Carpenter by “crafting homes” rather than building houses. Starnes Construction Company continues to be operated by his son.
A CVCC alumnus, Starnes encouraged everyone to attend school because he believed that education was a life-long process. He felt that an individual must make his or her own decision. However, he wanted everyone to have the chance to make a choice. He was a kind man with strong values and was respected by many. Family members created the endowment to memorialize Starnes’ love for his craft and positive attitude about learning.
Those interested in pursuing a career in construction can enroll in the four-week Construction Fundamentals Class that begins July 21 or an eight-week class that begins Sept 15. Graduates begin paid internships with area construction companies to learn one of the many construction trades. To register, contact CVCC at 828-327-7000 ext. 4294.
