Frequently Asked Questions

Thinking Guy

For questions about Circulation Services, email the Circulation Supervisor at stwilson@cvcc.edu.

Q.  What are the operating hours of the library?

A.  The operating hours for the library when classes are in session are 7:30am until 9:00pm, Monday through Thursday and 7:30am until 4:30pm on Friday.  The library is not open on weekends.  Operating hours during semester breaks and holidays will be posted.

Q.  How many books can I check out?

A.  To have library materials available to as many of our patrons as is humanly possible, we ask that you observe a limit of 20 items.

Q.  May I check out or borrow any periodicals?

A.  Periodicals and newspapers are only available for use within the library.

Q.  Does the library have back issues of any periodicals?

A.  The library maintains a collection of back issues to many of our periodicals. Inquire at the Circulation desk for assistance in using these resources.

Q.  Where is the fiction section?

A.  The library does not have a specific Fiction area within the collection shelving.  Many fiction titles are identified quickly within the on-line-catalog by utilizing the Author search, if known, or a Subject search using Fiction as the search term.

Q.  How much do you charge for overdue fines?

A.  The library does not charge fines for overdue materials.  However, when materials are not returned after overdue notices have been mailed to you, a block will be placed on your student record.  This blocks you from registering for classes or from receiving a transcripts.  You will also be charged for the replacement cost of the materials if you do not return them to the library.

Q.  Does the library have any videotapes?

A.  The library has videotape resources that cover many subject areas.  When you look up a specific Author, Title, or Subject search within the library on-line-catalog videotape resources will be displayed with a "VT" denoting the media type.  Videotapes are for use only within the library.

Q.  What hours are student IDs made?

A.  The library staff is available to make a student ID card, which is also your CVCC Library card, between the hours of 2:00pm until 8:00pm, Monday through Thursday, and between the hours of 2:00pm and 4:00pm on Friday.

Q.  Is there a phone I can use?

A.  No.  The telephone at the Circulation desk is a business telephone, reserved for use by the library staff.  There are several pay telephones located on campus for personal use.

Q.  Why is the library so hot/cold?

A.  The library heating, ventilation, and cooling system is controlled remotely from Maintenance.  As is true in many institutional settings, the change from heating to cooling or vice versa doesn't occur many times when we think they should.

Q.  Do you have stapler/ 3-hole punch/ pair of scissors/pencil sharpener that I can use?

A.  Yes.  The library has a number of these items available at the Circulation desk.

Q.  Can I make two-sided copies on the library copier?

A.  No.  The student copier within the library is set to copy on only one side.

Q.  Do I have to sign in to use the computer?

A.  Yes.  You will be asked to sign in on the computer use roster.  Library staff utilizes these numbers on the roster in reports when we are asked to forecast equipment needs.  By signing this roster, you are agreeing to be bound by the CVCC acceptable use of computers policy.

Q.  Does it cost anything to print from the computers in the library?

A.  No.  We ask that you use prudence in printing out large amounts of information.  Printing should be confined to research for class use.  If excessive printing does occur, you could be banned from using computers within the library.

Q.  What is NC Live?

A.  North Carolina Libraries for Virtual Education (NC LIVE) offers the citizens of North Carolina online access to complete articles from over 5,500 newspapers, journals, magazines, and encyclopedias, indexing for over 15,000 periodical titles, and access to over 13,000 electronic books. NC LIVE is available free of charge for library patrons, researchers, and educators from four communities of interest -- public libraries, community colleges, the state's university system, and members of the North Carolina Association of Independent Colleges and Universities. NC LIVE can be accessed from within an affiliated library or from home.

Q.  How do I use NC Live?

A.  The library staff will be happy to assist you in the use of this valuable resource.

Q.  Is this where I get the password for NC Live?

A.  Yes.  To receive a password to access NC Live from a location other than at CVCC you will need a valid and current library card.  Library staff will be happy to assist you in getting a password.

Q.  I think I have the correct password, but it is not working. What can the problem be?

A.  It may be one of several things. First, make sure that you are typing in all lower-case letters. Second, be sure that the library you choose from the drop-down box is CVCC's. Third, be sure that the password is current. Passwords change approximately every six months, in the winter and summer. Check with the library staff to verify that you are using the correct password.

Q.  May I do word processing on the library computers?

A.  The library computers do not have any word processing software loaded on them. Computers within the Learning Assistance Center or in one of the computer labs are available for this type of use.

Q.  Do I need to return telecourse tapes before taking my final exam?

A.  Yes.  All tapes within the set(s) that you received will need to be returned to the library.  After returning the tapes, you will be given paperwork to turn in to take your final exam.

Q.  I need to sign up for someone to tutor me for a class, can you help me?

A.  The tutoring services as well as many other study-related assistance is available to you within the Learning Assistance Center.
