The meeting was called to order at 10:00 AM in room 277, Robert E. Paap Building by President Doug Allen.
There was a discussion of the CVCC Staff Awards and the Professional Staff Member of the Year award for 2001-2002 was presented to Robyn Chapman.
There was a general discussion of the North Carolina budget issues and how it may affect community colleges and specifically CVCC. Robyn Chapman gave us some insights to several issues. Some issues discussed included summer enrollment funding, athletic programs, program evaluation based on generating FTE or self support receipts.
Doug Allen reported that $88 was collected from PSA members and was used to purchase box lunches for Catawba and Alexander county Senators and Representatives. Each lunch was delivered with an explanatory note. PSA members need to continue contacting by mail their specific Representative concerning funding for community colleges. Doug Allen will send a follow-up letter to all our legislators. Repetition is important to reinforce our needs in the minds of our legislators. Instructions for contacting our legislators was included in a recent e-mail from Doug Allen.
Doug Allen reported that the annual meeting with President Dunbar went well. This sentiment was supported by most of the PSA members who attended the meeting. The major items discussed involved pay and benefits. A memo will be sent to President Dunbar outlining our understanding of areas of agreement and plans to implement a strategy for results. A follow-up meeting of President Dunbar and Doug Allen is to be scheduled.
President Dunbar indicated that NCCCS has done a survey of all community colleges in North Carolina concerning holiday and annual leave practices. There appears to be wide variance in policies across North Carolina. The NCCCS State Board of Trustees will be reviewing this survey information and may make some recommendations for better uniformity. President Dunbar indicated a willingness to share this information with all CVCC employees.
Anyone interested in keeping up with legislative plans regarding the community college system is urged to subscribe for the electronic newsletter of the NCCCFA (North Carolina Community College Faculty Association) They have been very active in promoting the community college system and have an excellent newsletter and e-mail system. One may subscribe at web site http://ncccfa.org/subscribe.cfm
Doug Allen reported that the PSA will continue to coordinate and communicate with the CVCC Support Staff Association and the CVCC Faculty Senate. The Faculty Senate has not been as active in recent years as in the past.
At the last Administrative Council meeting the subject of smoking on campus was discussed especially "designated areas." Anyone with a concern or suggestion about smoking regulations and designated areas should contact Bo Glenn.
The meeting adjourned by consensus at 11:25
Respectfully submitted,
John Beall
Secretary-Treasurer
