CVCC Professional Staff Association
February 14, 2002
Valentine's Day
East Campus, Room 1001

Members Present: John Beall, Donna Trado, Karen Less, Judy Barkley, Sarah Loudermelk, Debbie Saine, Sandie Loyer, Carole Brown, LaDonna Goodson, Mary Miller (guest), Marian Baer, Sue Asp, Sallie Neville Merritt, Sandra Tow, Richard Smith, Doug Allen, Wanda Horvath (absent Wilbur)

The meeting was called to order at 2:30 PM in room 1001, CVCC East Campus by President Doug Allen.

This was an "Open" meeting for all CVCC professional staff with the objectives of reporting on PSA accomplishments and recruiting new members. Refreshments were provided by Teresa McReynolds and paid for with the Professional Professional Staff Association general funds.

Following refreshments, members and guests were asked to rank the proposed 2001-2002 Association objectives in order of importance.  The ranking was done through a voting process that involved everyone moving around the room, reading the objectives on chart pad sheets, and then voting by placing a numbered sticker on each objective. This system was selected to get members mixing and working together. Voting results will be provided by e-mail and posted to the PSA web page by early March.

Proposed Objectives:

  • Develop a plan to secure pay equity with faculty.
  • Develop leave policies for professional staff comparable to the policies of other community colleges and CVCC faculty.
  • Support the mentor program for new employees and inform them about the PSA.
  • Improve campus communications.
  • Coordinate emphasis on strategic planning for the college.
  • Improve/expand networking with professional staff at other community colleges.
  • Update the salary information in the P&P manual.
  • Continue cooperation with Support Staff Association and Faculty Senate.
  • Other (write in new ideas)

President, Doug Allen, reported on the presentation to the CVCC Board of Trustees on November 28, 2001.  While no definitive or specific action was taken by the Board, both Doug and Sue Asp feel the PSA and the report were better received than in the past.  The presentation focused on accomplishments of CVCC professional staff especially those items that were above and beyond the call of duty and/or brought "good press" to the college.

An extra Chart Pad sheet was used by Donna Trado to collect ideas for an appropriate award for the annual winner of the CVCC Professional Staff Person of the Year.   Several good ideas were collected, including:

  • "Good" reserved parking space for a year
  • Extra holiday for Birthday>
  • Monetary bonus
  • Paid registration fee and expenses to an out-of-state conference of my choice
  • Certificate to restaurant of my choice
  • Trophy

Any additional ideas should be given to Donna by phone or e-mail before Noon March 1.

Doug reported that letters have been sent to North Carolina State Senators and Representatives from Alexander and Catawba counties thanking them for their support of community college funding in the last legislative session.

The PSA brochure has been updated and is ready for distribution to any new CVCC professional staff employee.  President Doug Allen will arrange for this distribution to new employees.>  If you want a copy please request one from Doug.

The meeting adjourned by consensus at about 3:40.

Respectfully submitted,

John Beall
Secretary-Treasurer
