CVCC Professional Staff Association
October 3, 2002
East Campus, Room 947

Members Present: Doug Allen, Sue Asp, Sallie Neville-Merritt, John Beall, Donna Trado, Connie Frye, Judy Barkley, Sara Loudermelk, Debbie Saine, Karen Less, Sandie Loyer, Anne Williams, Wilbur

The meeting was called to order at 2:30 PM in room 947, CVCC East Campus by President Doug Allen.

Committee Reports: The previous meeting minutes were approved as posted on the PSA Web page and the Treasurer's report was approved.

Proposed Objectives: The 2001-2002 goals were summarized and discussed. Accomplishments and progress were noted in several areas. No additional goals were identified. Members will be requested to prioritize these goals for 2002-2003 by e-mail.

Comments on Goal #4: The Faculty Senate has been somewhat inactive for about 18 months. There is an attempt to get new Senate leadership and to become more active. The PSA will continue to offer to coordinate our activities with the Faculty Senate leadership. The PSA and the Support Staff Association (SSA) have been cooperating. The October 1 visit with Dr. Dunbar included representatives from both organizations.

Comments on Goal #11: CVCC will soon be getting a set of guidelines regarding the number of paid holiday that will be allowed each year.

Report of Meetings with Dr. Dunbar:
Sallie Neville-Merritt and President, Doug Allen reported on the meetings with Dr. Dunbar on June 13 and October 1.

One major area of concern is the "arbitrary" allocation of the $750.00 annual county supplement without written criteria. It was again proposed that the county supplement should be for ALL CVCC employees and should be the same as is done for public school employees. The PSA again requested Dr. Dunbar to pursue this goal.

Dr. Dunbar reported that starting in the 2003-2004 school year CVCC adopt the same number of holidays as for state employees. The actual schedule of the days will remain under local control.

Doug Allen reported that three options are being considered for CVCC employees to compensate for the legislature not giving a pay increase to community college employees for 2002-2003.

  1. grant an extra 10 annual leave days which is what the state employees are getting.
  2. give everyone a 1.84% salary increase which is what public school employees are getting.
  3. give a one time bonus ( dollar amount undetermined)

Everyone in attendance voted in favor of the 10 extra days annual leave. Donna Trado is to write a resolution to be sent to Dr. Dunbar indicating our desires.  (NOTE:  The Resolution was delivered to President Dunbar on Friday, October 4, 2002.

Report to CVCC Board of Trustees:

The reports of "accomplishments and activities" of CVCC Professional Staff appears to have made a favorable impression with the CVCC Board of Trustees. ALL CVCC Professional Staff will be encouraged with an e-mail to report their 2001-2002 "activities and accomplishments" to Donna Trado by October 25, 2002. Donna will prepare a report for the CVCC Board of Trustees. "Activities and accomplishments" may include active participation in both CVCC sponsored and community based organizations. Serving on Boards of Trustees/Directors, awards and publications are all items that should be included. In short, anything that brings "good press" to the college.

Election Results:

  • Donna Trado automatically moved from President Elect to President
  • Anne Williams was elected as President Elect
  • John Beall was elected as Secretary-Treasurer
  • Wanda Horvath and Sallie Neville-Merritt were elected as Members-at-Large

Accompanied by a virtual drum roll and regal trumpets sounding, the PSA Symbol of Authority, Wilbur D.O. Right was passed from President Doug Allen to President Donna Trado.

The meeting adjourned by consensus at about 3:40.

Respectfully submitted,

John Beall
Secretary-Treasurer
