President LaDonna Goodson called the meeting of the CVCC Professional Staff Association to order at 2:00.
Minutes
Minutes of the July 15, 1999 meeting were distributed via e-mail. One correction was noted; the by-laws amendment was made to Article VI, not Article I. Mike Fein's motion to approve with the correction was seconded by Doug Allen and approved.
Professional Development Planning Committee - Karen Less & Doug Allen
Doug Allen reported that a web page is available listing professional development opportunities. Norma Marler also has hard copies of the information. The revised form for reporting on Professional Development Plan implementation is on the J drive and is created in Excel for easy use. A cost column has been added. The committee is currently looking at the January in-service and soliciting suggestions for motivational speakers. The committee hopes to schedule the in-service for a day other than close to registration day.
Job Listings/Advertisement
Harry Cooke presented the Administrative Council with a document promoting the internal advertisement of College positions. Harry reported that Administrative Council considers that lateral moves need not be advertised. Mike Kidd is now sending the list of jobs available throughout the community college system to East Campus for posting. East Campus PSA members reported the list is being posted.
By-Laws Change
The by-laws change approved by the membership in July is now posted on the PSA web page.
Web Page
John Beall has graciously volunteered to maintain the PSA web page (which is accessed from the CVCC Intranet page).
Flood Relief
Dr. Hudson met with representatives from PSA, the Support Staff Association and faculty Senate to discuss how CVCC might assist in flood relief efforts. Sue reported that the truck went east this week with one-half a load. Wayne Community College was mentioned as a college CVCC might partner with. Following discussion, Doug Allen moved that PSA recommend partnering with a college to provide assistance to people (college employees and students); the motion was seconded by Karen Less and approved.
College Seal
LaDonna presented a suggested design to simplify the college seal. Members were encouraged to e-mail Coy with suggestions and comments.
Potential Goals
Using recommendations made by the Executive Committee, the members compiled the following list of goals for PSA 1999-2000. On a motion by Doug Allen, with second by Harry Cooke, the list was accepted with the plan for PSA members to prioritize the list via e-mail.
- Improve campus communication by:
-
- Putting all committee minutes on the Intranet;
- Making internal announcements of availability of all positions (newly created and existing) in advance of announcement to the public, and;
- Providing opportunities for advancement for currently employed staff.
- Encourage the college to develop and implement a strategic plan for CVCC for the next five years, with participation by the community and the entire college.
- Make the salary grade and range information in the Policy & Procedure Manual accurate.
- Seek pay equity with faculty. This will include both local and statewide campaigns.
- Produce an informational brochure on the PSA.
- Network with other NC community college staff associations.
- Investigate year-to-year employment appointments v. contracts.
- Explore means of recognizing outstanding service by professional staff.
During discussion of goals, the following information was shared:
RE: Committee minutes: should include meetings of Board of Trustees and Trustee committees.
RE: Strategic Plan: report of the Executive Planning Commission needs to be formally presented to staff and faculty; information should be shared on status of the master plan; the need for campus signage was reiterated.
RE: Pay Equity: Anne Williams reported that the community college budget must be submitted to the Governor by January, so if we want to lobby with the State Board and President Lancaster, the time is now.
RE: Brochure: would be used to give to new members.
The next meeting of PSA will be Thursday, January 20, 2000, 2:00 p.m. in East Campus 1001
There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned by LaDonna at 3:30.
Respectfully submitted,
Anne Williams
