October 2, 2000
Office of Sue Asp, President
Present: Doug Allen, Sue Asp, Judy Barkley, Teresa Biggs, Harry Cooke, LaDonna Goodson, Karen Less, Anne Williams, B. Townes, Betty Brame, Pat Riley
LaDonna Goodson opened the meeting.
Background: This called meeting by the CVCC PSA Executive Committee was held as a response to the July 20, 2000, CVCC PSA general meeting wherein the membership suggested that the CVCC PSA take the initiative to invite presidents of the various staff professional organizations to explore the possibility of forming a statewide community college staff organization. Teresa Biggs, President, NC Council for Officers of Resource Development, from CVCC, and B. Townes, President, Public Relations and Marketing, from Wilkes CC and Harry Cooke, representative, NCCC Learning Resource Association from CVCC attended. Accompanying Mr. Townes were representatives from the Staff Council from Wilkes CC, Betty Brame, Vice chairperson, and Pat Riley. Also invited were representatives from NCCC Adult Educators Association, NCCC Student Development Personnel Association, and Community College Planning and Research Organization.
Potential Issues: The group determined that membership definition and the formation of a communication system between colleges were issues to be resolved in forming a statewide organization. It was suggested that membership should be open to full time and part-time non-curriculum teaching staff. Since access to a uniform electronic mailing system is not available to all community colleges, it was suggested that each college designate a coordinator to assign representation.
Compensation, professional development, and healthcare are issues the group believes should be addressed by the organization on behalf of its members.
Where to go From Here: After identifying some potential issues, a discussion of how to organize a statewide association ensued. In order to first establish interest in this formation, the participants developed a survey form to be sent October 2000 to poll each community college as to the existence of an non-faculty employee association on campus and to identify either its contact person or the human resource director at each location. A two-week response deadline was set. Anne Williams volunteered to design the survey form.
B. Townes suggested that the group request the assistance of Chancey Kapp, Executive Assistant of External Affairs at the NCCCS office in distributing this survey.
Immediate follow-up with these contacts will be made to schedule a meeting of these representatives and/or the NCCC Student Development Personnel Pay Equity Task Force at a central location prior to Thanksgiving. Next meeting date is pending upon response to the survey.
The meeting was adjourned by LaDonna Goodson.
Respectively submitted,
Judy Barkley
Secretary-Treasurer
