Documented Analytical Essay Requirements

English 231: American Literature I Catawba Valley Community College

1. The documented analytical essay is a paper which explores some literary element of a piece of literature which has been
approved by the instructor. The student may choose to analyze the characters, themes, symbols, setting, or other literary
elements. The student is graded on the research process as well as the final product.

2. A minimum of five (5) sources must be used in the paper and must appear on the Works Cited page. One of your sources will be your primary source, the piece of literature under examination. You should be citing material from your short story as well as from the criticism you discovered in your research. Do not quote a critic who is quoting your selected piece of literature. In that case, go straight to the primary source. You should quote from a critic that critic's writing that supports your paper.

3. All borrowed materials must be documented with in-text documentation using MLA style.

4. The paper must be between 1,000 and 1,500 words which is 5-8 typed, doubled-spaced pages. Proportionate points will
be deducted for fewer than 1,000 words or more than 1,500 words. Total word count and total words directly quoted must be
placed at the bottom of the last page of your paper. No more than 10% of the final word count may be directly-quoted
material.
