Imagine if you needed medical care in America and did not speak the same language as your doctors and other health-care providers. Now imagine requiring life-saving tests—or even surgery—and no one speaks your language.
Thousands of non- English speaking people in the Catawba Valley need an interpreter to explain the health care they are receiving. Sometimes, that's provided by a friend or loved one. However, being bilingual doesn't guarantee they have the skills necessary to function as a medical interpreter.
CVCC is partnering with Catawba Valley Medical Center to offer a series of Medical Interpreter Training classes. Offered through CVCC's Corporate & Continuing Education Division, the series is designed to help bilingual individuals communicate medical diagnoses and treatment to non-English speaking patients. |

Medical Interpreter Training teaches the skills needed to remain neutral in these situations. Students learn how to clearly explain complex medical conditions, treatments, tests and procedures.
The training is divided into three modules, with each module requiring two days of training. The series covers the basics of anatomy, physiology, plus medical terminology and professional ethics. Tuition for each of the three modules is $55, plus a required manual.
You must be bilingual in English and any other language to register. Interpreters in health and social service settings, those who wish to work as medical interpreters and anyone who is regularly serving as a volunteer, contracted or freelance interpreter should register.
