Criminal Justice Faculty

Jeremy R. Wilson, M.A., Social Sciences

Jeremy Wilson has taught in the areas of criminal justice and history at CVCC since 2002. Prior to that, he taught social studies at East Burke High School and worked in enrolling and advising non-degree students at NC State University. He received a bachelor of arts degree in history from NC State University in 1997 and a master of arts degree in social sciences from Appalachian State University in 2000. He teaches introduction to criminal justice, law enforcement operations, corrections, and criminal justice organization and administration. 

Sherry O. Herman, M.C.J., C.C.I.A. - Department Chair

Sherry Herman leads the criminal justice technologies and latent evidence concentration. Her professional training in crime analysis applications, criminal intelligence analysis, criminal investigation analysis, gang awareness, and crime scene investigations have prepared her to teach all aspects of the criminal justice system. Formerly a Certified Criminal and Intelligence Analyst for Hickory Police Department, in Hickory, North Carolina, Herman has developed courses and techniques that aide criminal justice professionals in their daily activity with better proficiency. Her approach to hands-on-training in the classroom promotes team work along with a better understanding of legal definitions as they apply in a courtroom situation. From 1999 to 2004, Herman worked with the District Attorney's Office in the 25th Judicial District in Burke County, North Carolina. During her term, she held various professional memberships that assisted the court system to prosecute cases and assist the community, including:

  • Sexual Assault Response Team   (S.A.R.T.)
  • Domestic Violence Task Force   (D.V.T.F.)
  • Burke County Juvenile Crime Prevention Committee  (BC-JCPC)                             
She earned a master of criminal justice degree from Boston University in Boston, Massachusetts. She earned a bachelor of science (criminal justice) from Lees-McRae College in Banner Elk, North Carolina, where she graduated magna cum laude, and she earned an associate degree (criminal justice) from Western Piedmont Community College in Morganton, North Carolina, where she received Phi Theta Kappa status for academic excellence. Along with her professional and educational credentials, she holds academic memberships with the International Honor Society-Phi Theta Kappa (Alpha Gamma Mu), National Dean's List, and National Honor Society. She is a member of the North Carolina Criminal Justice Association. Dr. David Streater, Associate Dean for Public Safety 

Dr. David Streater was raised in the Piedmont and Mountain regions of North Carolina, the son of a United Methodist minister. After graduating from Pisgah Senior High School in Canton, North Carolina, Dr. Streater enlisted in the Navy. He served aboard the U.S.S. Nitro, and later was assigned to the Judge Advocate General's office at the Naval Training Center, Orlando, Florida.  After active duty, Dr. Streater served in the Naval Reserves while attending Central Piedmont Community College. He graduated from Pfeiffer College (now Pfeiffer University). He and his wife, Vivian, moved to central Florida where he earned a master of science in criminal justice from Rollins College.  In 1980 Dr. Streater was hired as a state probation & parole officer with the Florida Department of Corrections, Probation and Parole Services. He held a number of positions there, eventually serving as senior supervisor III.  During this time he started teaching part-time at Valencia Community College, subsequently becoming the Program Director of Criminal Justice as a full-time instructor. While there, he also taught at the University of Central Florida before returning home to North Carolina with Vivian and his two children, Matthew and Aaron. He taught at Pfeiffer University as an associate professor, and in 1999 he accepted the position of department head of criminal justice at CVCC. He was promoted to division chair, including the social/behavioral sciences and health/physical education. During this time, he completed his doctorate at Barry University. His dissertation explored the effect of school resource officers on North Carolina urban and rural high schools.  In August 2008, Dr. Streater was promoted to the associate dean of the School of Public Safety. The scope of this position includes a number of curriculum and continuing education programs in the areas of criminal justice, fire protection, basic law enforcement training, emergency medical science, latent evidence, paralegal, cyber crime, and training for fire and rescue personnel.  Dr. Streater can be contacted at david.streater@cvcc.edu
