Frequently Asked Questions

Q.  What are the operating hours of the library?
A.  The operating hours for the library when classes are in session are 7:30 am until 8 p.m., Monday through Thursday, and 7:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. on Friday. The library is not open on weekends. Operating hours during semester breaks and holidays will be posted.

Q.  How many books can I check out?
A.  To have library materials available to all of our patrons, we ask that you observe a limit of 20 items.

Q.  May I check out or borrow any periodicals?
A.  Periodicals and newspapers are only available for use within the library.

Q.  Does the library have back issues of any periodicals?
A.  The library maintains a collection of back issues to many of our periodicals. Inquire at the circulation desk for assistance in using these resources.

Q.  Where is the fiction section?
A.  The library does not have a specific fiction area within the collection shelving. Many fiction titles are identified quickly within the on-line-catalog by utilizing the author search, if known, or a subject search using fiction as the search term.

Q.  How much do you charge for overdue fines?
A.  The library does not charge fines for overdue materials.  However, when materials are not returned after overdue notices have been e-mailed to you, a block will be placed on your student record. This blocks you from registering for classes, receiving your grades, and from receiving a transcript. You will also be charged for the replacement cost of the materials if you do not return them to the library.

Q.  What hours are student IDs made?
A.  The CVCC Library no longer makes IDs for CVCC students.  CVCC students will now receive the CVCCOneCard in the mail.  This card will function as your library card.  The CVCC Library will make student IDs for students who are actively enrolled in Allied Health programs.

Q.  Is there a phone I can use?
A.  No.  The telephone at the circulation desk is a business telephone, reserved for use by the library staff.  There are several pay telephones located on campus for personal use.

Q.  Do you have stapler/3-hole punch/pair of scissors/pencil sharpener that I can use?

A.  Yes.  The library has a number of these items available at the circulation desk.

Q.  Does it cost anything to print from the computers in the library?

A.  Yes.  The current print cost is .10 per page.  A copy card must be purchased in the CVCC Bookstore prior to printing.

Q.  What is NC Live?
A.  North Carolina Libraries for Virtual Education (NC LIVE) offers the citizens of North Carolina online access to complete articles from over 5,500 newspapers, journals, magazines, and encyclopedias, indexing for over 15,000 periodical titles, and access to over 13,000 electronic books. NC LIVE is available free of charge for library patrons, researchers, and educators from four communities of interest: public libraries, community colleges, the state's university system, and members of the North Carolina Association of Independent Colleges and Universities. NC LIVE can be accessed from within an affiliated library or from home.

Q.  How do I use NC Live?
A.  The library staff will be happy to assist you in the use of this valuable resource.

Q.  Is this where I get the password for NC Live?
A.  Yes. To receive a password to access NC Live from a location other than at CVCC you will need a valid and current library card. Library staff will be happy to assist you in getting a password.  You can call the Library Circulation Desk at ext. 4229 for the current password.

Q.  I think I have the correct password, but it is not working. What can the problem be?
A.  It may be one of several things. First, make sure that you are typing in all lower-case letters. Second, be sure that the library you choose from the drop-down box is CVCC's. Third, be sure that the password is current. Passwords change yearly. Check with the library staff to verify that you are using the correct password.

Q.  May I do word processing on the library computers?
A.  Yes, the library computers contain the Microsoft Office Suite.

Q.  I need to sign up for someone to tutor me for a class, can you help me?
A.  The tutoring services, as well as many other study-related assistance, are available to you within the Learning Assistance Center located on the first floor of the Cuyler A Dunbar (CAD) Building.
