This program is designed to equip students with the basic skills, knowledge and ability to function as an inexperienced law enforcement officer in the state of North Carolina. The total number of course hours required for this certification are set by the NC Criminal Justice Commission.
The Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) Program at Catawba Valley Community College provides participants with a background of the fundamentals of law, procedures, and techniques necessary for success as a law enforcement officer. The course content is designed to prepare individuals for positions as rookie police officers or sheriff's deputies.
Over 600 hours in length, CVCC offers one of the few evening/Saturday programs in the area to allow students to work.
A rigorous physical component introduces students to the handling of firearms, driving a police vehicle, and subject control. A stringent physical fitness training module is also required. Upon successful completion of all facets of the program, students take the Basic Law Enforcement Certification examination administered by a representative of the North Carolina Criminal Justice Training Standards Division. Upon passing this examination in its entirety, the graduate may seek employment as a sworn law enforcement officer with local agencies.
