CVCC Potters' Workshop

Pottery Class Schedules

Students must have or have purchased a basic pottery tool-kit that is available at the CVCC Bookstore and/or local craft stores. Students should bring a towel and apron to class and dress in comfortable clothes that they don't mind getting dirty.

Fees for the classes listed include the cost of the class, clay, glaze materials, kiln firings and insurance.

Open Workshop with Kim Ellington

This class offers students with prior experience on the potters' wheel the opportunity to work on individual clay projects of their own choosing. The purpose of the class is to enable students to work at their own pace to develop their skill level and personal style while receiving guidance and instruction from a working, professional potter. Students will have full use of the workshop facility including glazes and kiln. Open lab time outside of regular class hours is also available. Upon completion students will have an advanced understanding of working on the potters' wheel, glaze preparation and kiln firing. No class 9/17/15.

Functional Pottery I with Kim Ellington

This class will focus on making pots for everyday use. Making tumbler and coffee mug sets, small and large bowls as well as pitchers will be covered. Students are required to have prior experience using the potters' wheel. Upon completion students will have an understanding of working on the potters' wheel to create functional pots, glazing and kiln firing.

Hand Building I with Evelyn Arnold

This course if for beginner through intermediate level pottery student and provides instruction on basic hand building techniques. Students will learn techniques for hand building a variety of functional forms such as mugs, bowls and platters without the use of the potters' wheel. Topics include methods of pinch, coil and slab construction, applying glaze and introduction to loading and firing an electric kiln.

Pottery on the Wheel I with Evelyn Arnold

This class is designed for the beginner through intermediate level potter. In this course, students will become familiar with turning methods and materials used in the creating basic forms with the potters' wheel. Topics include clay preparation, turn techniques, and basic glaze application. Upon completion, students should be able to center, turn basic forms such as bowls and mugs, apply basic glazes and be familiar with loading and firing an electric kiln.

Summer Workshops

Creating Unique Pottery: Decorating Techniques with Raine Middleton

This one day hands-on workshop taught by Raine Middleton, is a "how to" guide for creating unique pottery. It is designed for potters of every level who are interested in stylizing their pottery. Techniques that will be covered include paper resist, wax resist, simple alterations, stencil and soft stamp printing, sprigging/stamping, slip trailing, carving and sgraffito. Upon completion of the workshop, completed tiles will be bisque fired (not glazed) in an electric kiln, and participants will be able to pick up their work between August 24 and 28. Lunch will be provided. *Students must bring a basic pottery tool-kit that is available at the CVCC Bookstore and/or local craft stores.

Fall Workshops

Beginning Mosaic Workshop with Debra Zimmerman

Learn how to turn broken pottery into colorful mosaic creations.  Students will create their own design, attach their mosaic pieces to a base and grout the finished piece.  You may bring a drawing, picture or other inspiration for a design you would like to make.  You may also bring your own pottery pieces or items from home that you may want to incorporate such as: glass, stones, old jewelry or sea shells to create a one of a kind mosaic.  No previous experience is necessary.

Whistle Making Workshop with Debra Zimmerman

During this 3-hour workshop, students will use basic clay forming techniques to construct and shape a working whistle.  Students will also embellish and decorate their whistle in order to create a one-of-a kind instrument.  Whistles will be bisque fired and available for pick up on 10/21/15  from 5pm to 7pm.  All skill levels are welcome.  *Students must bring a basic pottery tool-kit that is available at the CVCC Bookstore and/or local craft stores.
