Intensive Wheel Throwing Workshop

The focus of this two week workshop will be on developing and improving your wheel throwing skills. Students will be introduced to different techniques to create functional forms. We will also cover surface decoration techniques such as chattering, carving, slip trailing and inlay. This workshop is open to anyone with basic throwing experience.

 Handbuilding & Surface Decoration Workshop

Now you have a handbuilding class under your belt, how about trying some advanced projects and new approaches to glazing and decorating your work? In this two week intensive workshop you will learn how to make tiles, lanterns, planters or flower vases, all with new surface treatments. Students will do work without the use of the potters' wheel. Intermediate Pottery I- Wheel Throwing

This class is designed for the intermediate level potter.  This course focuses on refining wheel throwing skills and exploring possibilities on the potter's wheel.  Students will learn to turn various functional forms.  Glazes and surface design techniques, such as slip carving, inlay and slip trailing will also be covered in this class.  Upon completion, students should be able to produce a variety of functional forms, trim, apply glazes and be familiar with loading and firing a kiln.  No class on 9/1/14.

Handbuilt Pottery I

This class is designed to provide the basics for a strong foundation in handbuilt pottery forms.  Build and enhance your skills thru demonstrations and individual instruction.  Handbuilding will focus on pinch, slab and coil construction to create one of a kind unique pottery forms without the use of a potters' wheel.  All levels are welcome.

Pottery on the Wheel I

This class is designed for the beginner through intermediate level potter.  In this course, students will become familiar with turning methods and materials used in creating basic forms with the potters' wheel.  Topics include clay preparation, turning techniques and basic glaze application.  Upon completion, students should be able to center and turn basic forms such as bowls and mugs, apply basic glazes and be familiar with loading and firing a kiln.

Catawba Valley Pottery I

Designed for those who have prior experience working on the potters' wheel, this class will focus on the methods, materials and history of the local Catawba Valley pottery tradition.  Topics include clay preparation, turn techniques, glaze application and the firing process.  Upon completion, students will be able to make basic forms on the potters' wheel and have an understanding of glazing and firing pottery.

Handbuilding Pottery I

This hands-on class inspires experiments with forms and methods of construction.  Geared toward creative expansion, we use hand building techniques, such as coil, pinch and soft slab construction to generate a variety of forms without the use of the a potter's wheel.  Development of the surface through texture, inlay and slip trailing will also be covered in this class.

Decorative Pottery: Surface & Form

Students will explore various decorating techniques and the relevancy to the pottery form.  Techniques will include sprigging, stamping, carving, slip trailing and sgraffito.  Students should bring throwing tools, brushes and carving tools, and be prepared to share ideas, processes, glazes, pictures and demos.  Basic wheel throwing & hand building skills are needed.

 **Students must have or have purchased a basic pottery tool-kit that is available at the CVCC Bookstore and/or local craft stores. Students should bring a towel and apron to class and dress in comfortable clothes that they don't mind getting dirty.**

**Fees for the classes listed include the cost of the class, clay, glaze materials, kiln firings and insurance.
