Oil & Acrylic Painting

Start a new adventure with oil and acrylic painting! This class is designed for beginners and those wanting to improve their painting skills. Emphasis will be on color mixing, technique, safety in using materials, and learning to see color and composition. Supply list is available prior to the class.

POTTERY CLASSES

All classes will be held at the Catawba Valley Potters' Workshop, 5845 Walnut Grove Lane, Hickory (Mountain View area).  Students must purchase a tool kit which is available at the CVCC Bookstore and/or local craft stores.  Students should bring their tool kit, a towel and apron to the class.  All pottery classes are $156.25 which includes registration of $120, $35.00 supply fee and $1.25 insurance fee.  Most of the pottery classes are 9-week classes.

Pottery Basics

Designed for the beginner and experienced potter, this course will emphasize clay preparation, turning techniques using the potter's wheel, as well as glaze mixing and application. Upon completion, students will be familiar with working on the potter's wheel, glaze mixing and application and firing techniques.

Students must purchase a tool kit which is available at the CVCC Bookstore and local craft stores. Students should also bring a towel and apron to class and dress in comfortable clothes.

Pottery II

Designed for experienced as well as beginner level potters, students will learn to create a variety of forms including pitchers, vases and lidded jars.  Also included is instruction on how to apply glazes and the proper procedure for loading and firing an electric kiln. Upon completion, students will be familiar with working on the potter's wheel, glaze application and firing techniques.

Students must purchase a tool kit which is available at the CVCC Bookstore and local craft stores. Students should also bring a towel and apron to class and dress in comfortable clothes.

Pottery III

Pre-requisite: Pottery II or equivalent

This course is for students with prior experience using the potters' wheel.  Students will work at their own pace on individual projects. Instructor guidance and evaluation will be provided. The goal of this class is for the student to develop consistent making techniques focusing on personal design. Glaze mixing as well as advanced glazing methods will be discussed. 

Students must have a tool kit, which is available at the CVCC Bookstore and local craft stores. Students should also bring a towel and apron to class and dress in comfortable clothes.

Raku Pottery

Experience the excitement of Raku, an ancient Japanese method of glazing and firing of either hand built or wheel thrown pottery. This course will include the creation of unique clay pieces, as well as glazing and firing pieces in a specially built Raku kiln. The experience is spontaneous and dramatic as the pieces emerge from the fire. This class is for the beginner as well as the experienced potter. Firings are held the last day of class, from 9:00am to 3:00pm.

Figurative Form in Clay

This sculpture class is for students with some previous clay working skills; this course is designed to explore the figure and its construction using coil, slab and direct building techniques. Students will be asked to bring in a picture or pictures, of a figurative subject. The picture will be used as a base for general intention as the figure and its basic components are considered. The focus will be on interpretation of form and perception using clay as the vechicle to express ideas, gestures and concepts. Low and mid fire clays will be used and extensive techniques for finishing will be discussed.

Hand Building Techniques

For students of all skill levels, including beginners, this course is designed to teach the many varied techniques and applications for hand building with clay. Students will focus on various ways and tools that can be used to make many forms for utilitarian use. This course will explore the use of molds, slabs and coils with an emphasis on surface design and glazing techniques.
