2013 Nursing 292-A Class Africa Medical Trip

Africa Medical TripCatawba Valley Community College seeks to provide innovative educational experiences for students. The CVCC School of Health & Public Services 2013 Nursing 292-A Class - Africa Medical Service/Mission Project allowed students to travel to Africa on a medical mission trip to Mwandi, Zambia. Service learning and exposure in the healthcare industry in a “developing country” (third-world-country) was accomplished by working with the Lozi tribe.

This class worked collaboratively with medical providers and/or a church medical group. The trip occured May 4, 2013 through May 17, 2013.

This scholarly activity allowed students to participate in healthcare in a non-traditional environment and experience team building. This activity also helped the student learn to think critically as they had an opportunity to determine how they would provide healthcare to patients in a developing country. This commitment to participate in the experience helped promote scholarship in the participants.

Student learning outcomes at the completion of NUR 292, were that the student would be able to:

  • Analyze the effects of selected social, economic and political factors on individuals, families, and communities.
  • Assess the resources available for provision of healthcare in an economically disadvantaged region.
  • Utilize critical thinking skills to provide safe and accurate nursing care to clients in situations where resources are limited.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the interaction between cultural and spiritual beliefs and the provision of healthcare.
  • Provide culturally competent nursing care to clients in non-traditional settings.
  • Adapt principles of teaching and learning to meet the needs of a community with limited resource

Students recorded their experiences that met these outcomes through a guided journaling experience. Participants committed to payment of all expenses for which there was no funding available. This experience enhanced each student’s ability to meet program learning outcomes.
