A. Employee, Student, and Visitor Screening Protocol
Designated screeners will check the temperature of each faculty, staff, student, and visitor before that person can enter any building on the CVCC campus.
- If the person’s temperature is greater than 100° F or 38.7° C, that individual will not be allowed entry and will be asked to contact their primary care physician before returning to campus.
- If that person cannot leave campus immediately, he or she will be given a protective mask. The screener will call Clyde Deal at extension 4573. They will escort the individual to the Isolation Area to await transportation.
- If that person is a faculty or staff member, the designated screener will record their name, department or area, and temperature.
Signage: Signage at each entrance to each building will inform all employees, students, and visitors that they will not be allowed to remain on campus under the following conditions:
- They refuse to have their temperature checked,
- They have their temperature checked and the results indicate a temperature over 100° F or 38.7° C, or
- They are currently experiencing shortness of breath or cough not related to a chronic condition.

B. Social Distancing Protocol
Social distancing is one of the approaches being used worldwide to slow the spread of the COVID-19 virus. To help ensure the health and safety of all faculty, staff, students, and visitors, CVCC has implemented the following social distancing requirements.
Social Distancing Requirements:
- Until further notice, all students and non-essential faculty and staff are encouraged to study or work from home. The date to begin phasing employees and students back into the college operations has yet to be determined.
- When returning to campus after restrictions have been lifted, …
- All faculty, staff, students, and visitors are required to maintain a distance of at least 6 feet from others at all times (in all classroom settings, in all hallways, and during all interactions).
- No gatherings of more than ten people will be permitted at any time on campus until the Governor of North Carolina allows and until the Pandemic Leadership Team feels that the college can safely move forward. During those gatherings, individuals must remain at least 6 feet apart.
- Faculty, staff, or students who are ill will be strongly encouraged to stay home until they have been free of fever for at least 48 hours without the aid of fever reducing drugs.
- All faculty, staff, students, and visitors must adhere to any movement restrictions imposed by the College, such as the closing of certain buildings, the rerouting of foot or vehicle traffic, etc.
- Signage: Signage explaining the above requirements will be posted on each entrance to each building.
- Note: Refusal to adhere to the above protocol will result in the individual’s removal from the campus.
Other Social Distancing Guidelines:
Practicing social distancing off campus can help contain the spread of COVID-19. The following are suggestions for such social distancing practices:
- Stay home whenever possible.
- Avoid places where many people are together.
- Work or study from home, whenever possible.
- Avoid healthcare settings unless essential services are needed.
- Avoid public transport, whenever possible.
- Do not host visitors or gatherings in your home.
- Maintain the 6 feet rule when out in public.
C. Good Hygiene Campaign Protocol
- All students will be provided protective face masks and are encouraged to bring their own face coverings.
- All students and employees should wash their hands or sanitize their hands immediately upon entering the campus where CVCC classes are offered (including high schools).
- All employees will be provided protective face masks.
- All students, employees, and visitors will be required to wear protective face masks or face coverings when interacting with others on campus, when in public access areas, or when in areas with a significant number of individuals.
- Students and employees in high-risk contact programs (for example, dental hygiene and cosmetology) will be issued gloves, face masks, gowns, and eye shields, as appropriate.
- Individuals that work in areas where contact closer than 6 feet is regularly allowed will be provided sneeze shields (for example, reception areas).
- All employees and students will be encouraged to practice good hygiene at all times, including but not limited to the following:
- Sneezing Etiquette: Cover nose and mouth with a tissue and sneeze into one’s elbow; wash hands and discard tissue immediately afterwards.
- Coughing Etiquette: Cover nose and mouth with a tissue and cough away from others; wash hands and discard tissue immediately afterwards.
- Handwashing Etiquette: Scrub hands thoroughly (between fingers, under nails, on back of hands) for at least 20 seconds, using soap and water or an alcohol-based hand sanitizer. Wash hands before eating; after using the bathroom; after blowing nose, coughing, or sneezing; and after touching a surface frequently touched by others.
D. Disinfection Protocol
Note: Viruses can survive on non-porous surfaces (steel, plastic) for up to 24-48 hours and on cloth, paper, and tissues for up to 8-12 hours. Viruses can be transferred from non-porous surfaces to hands for up to 24 hours and from tissue to hand for up to 15 minutes.
- Frequency:
- Cleaning staff will disinfect the office areas of those working on campus daily, focusing especially on doorknobs, light switches, desks, keyboards, phones, and any other frequently touched items.
- Cleaning staff will disinfect campus restrooms, conference rooms, and other areas daily.
- Employees are encouraged to disinfect their own office areas daily upon entering, focusing on the above areas. Employees will be provided disinfecting wipes or sprays and disposable gloves.
- Procedure:
- Surfaces should be cleaned with EPA-registered household disinfectants. A list of products that are EPA-approved for use against the virus causing COVID-19 is available on the CDC website.
- If an EPA-registered disinfectant is not available, cleaning staff should use a diluted solution (1:100 volume/volume-600 parts per quart) or alcohol solutions with at least 70% alcohol, applying it to a clean surface with a cloth moistened with the bleach solution and allowing the surface to remain wet for 5 minutes.
- Cleaning staff should follow the manufacturer’s directions for all cleaning and disinfection products.
- All contaminated materials must be placed in the trash. Trash bags must be properly tied or secured.
E. Isolation Area Protocol
- CVCC Administration will designate a room to be used for the purpose of isolating anyone with a fever greater than 100°F or 38.7°C.
- Screeners will immediately contact Steve Hunt at extension 4578 or Clyde Deal at extension 4573 concerning anyone with a fever greater than 100°F.
- Steve Hunt (or his designee) will escort individuals determined to have a fever greater than 100°F or 38.7°C to the Isolation Area, if those individuals are not able to leave the campus immediately.
- Individuals who are escorted to the Isolation Area will be provided and required to wear a facemask.
- Those individuals placed in the Isolation Area must remain there until they can leave the campus; they will be encouraged to contact their primary health care physician as soon as possible and to remain at home until they have a fever under 100°F without the use of fever-reducing drugs.
F. Measures to Protect Employee Health Protocol
- Until additional restrictions are lifted, all non-essential and essential employees will continue to work at home whenever possible.
- Employees who must come on campus for a short time will be required to notify their supervisor via email (copying Steve Hunt and Mark Wise) at least 24 hours prior to their visit. Before beginning work, employees will be required to disinfect their office area, cleaning doorknobs, keyboards, phones, and any other frequently touched items. Before leaving their office, employees will be required to repeat that cleaning process.
- While on campus, employees are discouraged from engaging in face-to-face meetings; if they must do so, they will not be allowed to meet in groups exceeding 10 people. They must maintain a distance of 6 feet at all times.
- Employees who are sick are strongly encouraged to remain at home until they have been fever free for at least 48 hours without the aid of fever-reducing drugs.
- Employees must have their body temperature screened before being allowed to enter any building. Employees whose temperature exceeds 100°F or 38.7°C will be required to leave the campus immediately and advised to seek care under their primary care physician. If they cannot leave immediately, the Pandemic Coordinator (Steve Hunt or Clyde Deal) will be notified and will escort them to the Isolation Area until transportation arrives.
- Administration will designate a room as the Isolation Area. All persons who refuse to have their body temperature checked or whose temperature is above 100°F or 38.7°C will be escorted to the Isolation Area until they can arrange transportation to leave the campus.
- All employees will be informed of and strongly encouraged to follow the Good Hygiene Campaign guidelines, which specify correct hand washing procedures, cough and sneeze etiquette, and disposal of used tissues and supplies. See the Good Hygiene Campaign Protocol for detailed guidelines.
- Communication to all employees will occur on a regular basis and through a variety of platforms concerning the following: status of the pandemic; available local, state, and national resources; campus access procedures; health plan notices; leave policy adjustments; and any other information deemed important to help faculty and staff navigate the current uncertain environment.
- All employees are required to follow CVCC’s Social Distancing Protocol until further notice.
- All workstations will be separated by at least 6 feet.
- All employees will be provided hand sanitizer, disinfectant wipes, face masks, and gloves.
