Medical Coding Outpatient: Basic and Advanced
Medical Coding teaches students the medical codes needed to document medical procedures and submit those codes for billing.
The below classes are required to be taken in the following order:
- Medical Administrative Assistant
- Healthcare Billing and Coding
- CPC Exam Prep
Books: The classes will use Cengage Unlimited Access (e-book) at a cost of about $240 for all 3 classes. Hard-copy rentals will be available from Cengage for an additional $8-10 each. The last course, CPC Exam Prep, may have an additional book to purchase.
Medical Administrative Assistant
The focus of the Medical Administrative Assistant course is to prepare students for entry-level employment as medical office receptionists, medical billing clerks, medical records clerks and other administrative positions in a variety of settings. Through the program, students gain knowledge of medical terminology, general medical office procedures and acquire the skills necessary to deliver effective customer service and perform important administrative duties. Courses are designed to equip students with the skills needed to perform EMR data entry and develop and maintain patient files and records. Additionally, students become familiar with basic procedural and diagnostic coding systems and processes, medical records management, coding applications, reimbursement, medical ethics and compliance and HIPAA rules and regulations related to the privacy and security of patient information. Upon completion, the student will have the knowledge to sit for industry-recognized certifications. The class will meet online except for the first and last days.
Prerequisite
Student must have and be able to use a computer.
Note: High School diploma will most likely be reqiured to gain employment in the medical coding field.
Cost
$180 registration fee plus a $6.25 fee for a total of $186.25 A textbook will be required.
This class will be offered online and will meet in-person the first and last evenings. We will offer weekly optional virtual sessions on Monday evenings from 7:00-8:00 PM.

Class Offering
Class will begin each January.
This 120-hour study of the professional medical language is directed towards the lay person as well as those already working in a medical setting. The first night of class will be on campus and the remainder will be online. High school diploma or GED required at registration. Text required.
Prerequisite
Students must have taken Medical Office Assistant prior to taking Medical Terminology or have medical office experience.
Cost
$180 registration fee plus a $6.25 fee for a total of $186.25. A textbook will be required.

Class Offering
Healthcare Billing and Coding (CPT and ICD Coding)
This course prepares an individual for entry level healthcare billing and coding positions. Course topics can include but are not limited to the roles and responsibilities of this position, managed health care, life cycle of an insurance claim, legal and regulatory considerations, coding regulations, reimbursement issues, claim instructions, medical terminology, filing commercial claims, insurance plans, Medicare, Medicaid, Tricare, and Workers' Compensation. Upon completion, students should also be able to utilize MS Windows and the internet to effectively retrieve billing-related information and updates. This program is online, but will meet six nights during the course of the program.
Prerequisites
Students must have taken Medical Terminology prior to taking Healthcare Billing and Coding. Students must have access to ICD-10 and CPT coding books. Text required. CPT-4 and ICD-10 Coding Manuals will be available to borrow from CVCC.

The instructor will let you know in advance what these dates will be. Additional sessions are optional to answer questions on completed chapters and to cover upcoming material with coding examples..

Class Offering
CPC Exam Prep
For the experienced student and for students meeting the prerequisites of Medical Terminology and Healthcare Billing and Coding - this class will prepare you to take the examination to be a certified coder. Student are required to have ICD-10 and CPT coding books. HCPCS is strongly suggested.
Prerequisites
Students must have taken Medical Office Assistant, Medical Terminology, and Healthcare Billing and Coding prior to taking CPC Exam Prep.
Cost
$180 registration fee plus a $6.25 fee for a total of $186.25. A Cengage textbook code and coding books will be required. A CPC prep book may also be required.
Class meeting
In addition to the first virtual class, this course will also meet virtually 2 designated evenings to facilitate learning. The instructor will let you know in advance what these dates will be. Other sessions are optional and will help students better understand appropriate code selection.
