The trucking industry continues to be a major employer in the United States, with almost 9 million people employed in trucking-related jobs. Over 3 million of these are drivers of tractor-trailers operated by over 550,000 interstate motor carriers. More than 80% of U.S. cities receive their goods exclusively from trucks.
There is already a shortage of about 20,000 long-haul heavy-truck drivers and experts say there will be over 500,000 drivers needed in the next 10 years to meet economic expansion and replace drivers who are retiring.
CCC&TI has a very successful job placement program with numerous local and national trucking companies recruiting graduates during and after each class. During the April 2008 – March 2009 reporting period, CCC&TI graduated 160 students with 60% of those being pre-hired prior to graduation.
Graduates from the program can expect to average $34,000 or more their first year and up to $50,000 or better with one year of experience.
Program Background:
CCC&TI's truck driver training program started around 1990 with one truck and a few students. CCC&TI now has over 60 pieces of equipment and has graduated over 2000 CDL drivers in the past 10 years. CCC&TI offers full-time day and part-time evening and weekend classes to fit most schedules. Day classes require 8.5 weeks to complete, evening classes 15 weeks and weekend classes take 17 weekends. Satellite or off-campus day classes are also available at several locations such as Gaston College, Dallas Campus, Mitchell Community College, Statesville Campus, Mayland Community College, Newland Campus and Catawba Valley Community College, Hickory East Campus.
The truck driver training programs at Hudson and Hickory are certified by the Professional Truck Driving Institute (PTDI) www.ptdi.org located in Alexandra, VA. PTDI is the first non-profit organization to develop uniform skills performance, curriculum and certification standards for the trucking industry and to award course certification to entry-level truck driver finishing programs.
The Federal Motor carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) supports the PTDI curriculum as representing the basis for adequate training of entry-level drivers.
