2010 Volleyball Highlights

 

Tri-match at CVCC vs. Pitt CC and Surry CC                                                            Saturday, October 09, 2010 The CVCC Lady Buccaneers hosted Pitt Community College and Surry Community College on Saturday, October 09, 2010 for a conference tri-match.  Both Pitt and Surry came into today's match unbeaten in conference play.  The CVCC Bucs took on the Pitt Bulldogs during the opening match.  Both teams came out strong playing with lots of energy, but Pitt took the first game 25-20.  The Bucs battled back in the second game overcoming the Bulldogs 26-24.  A slow start hurt the CVCC Bucs in the third game allowing the Pitt Bulldogs to take an early lead that the Bucs couldn't recover from.  The Lady Bulldogs won it, 25-15.  In the fourth game, the Bucs picked up their game and won 25-21.  Intensity was high in the final game as the two teams battled back and forth, but the Bucs persevered to take the match 15-11 and give Pitt their first conference loss of the year. Leading the offense was Francesca Edgerton with 11 kills for the match.   Breckin Settlemyer was strong with 10 killls, and Erin Collins added 8 more.  On the block, Breckin Settlemyer dominated with 9 total blocks for the match.  Francesca Edgerton had 6 blocks.  Carolyn Houser led the team in the assists category with 35 for the match.   The defensive team worked together, with Erin Collins leading in digs with 21.  Sarah Marshall had 20, Carolyn Houser had 15 and Darla Skidmore had 14 digs.  Pitt CC and Surry CC played the next match, and Pitt won 25-21, 25-15, 21-25 and 25-11 giving Surry their first conference loss. In the final match-up of the day, the CVCC Buccaneers took on the Knights of Surry Community College.  CVCC came out hot in the first game, winning 25-16.  The Bucs continued to dominate in the second game, winning 25-11.  Surry came out strong in the third game, winning 20-25.  CVCC refocused in the fourth game and cruised to a 25-9 to complete the sweep of the tri-match.  Francesca Edgerton led the offensive attack with 13 kills for the match.  Megan Clark had 9 and Breckin Settlemyer added 8.  Francesca Edgerton also led the block with 6 and Breckin Settlemyer contributed 5.  Carolyn Houser and Chelsea Stutesman shared assists with 19 and 10 respectively.  Sarah Marshall shut down the Knight's offense with 20 digs for the match.  Erin Collins added 10 digs and led the team in serving with 5 aces.  The Buc's improve their conference record to 8-1 and their overall record to 15-3.  The CVCC Lady Buccaneers travel to Guilford Tech Community College on Tuesday, October 12th for another conference match before returning home on Saturday, October 16th to compete against Rockingham Community College in a 2:00 match.  The Buc's "Dig Pink" campaign continues during the month of October as they raise awareness and support for breast cancer.  They will also participate in the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure on Saturday, October 16th.

CVCC Downs Johnson and Wales University 3-0 Thursday, October 07, 2010 CVCC’s Lady Buccaneers hosted the Wildcats of Johnson and Wales University Thursday, October 07, 2010 in a 7:00 non-conference match. The Bucs kicked off their "Dig Pink" campaign at the match by recognizing breast cancer survivors and those who have passed away from the disease, with roses and special music during intermission between games 2 and 3. A special thank you to everyone who helped to make this event a success. The "Dig Pink" campaign will continue during the entire month of October at home matches. The Lady Buccaneers won in three games with scores 25-12, 25-21, and 25-11. Offense was led by Francesca Edgerton who had 11 kills for the match. Megan Clark had 10 and Breckin Settlemyer contributed 8. Carolyn Houser posted 23 assists. Defensive specialist Darla Skidmore dug up 10 balls to lead the defensive game for the Bucs. Sarah Marshall had 8 digs and Erin Collins had 6. The Bucs take on Pitt Community College and Surry Community College in a tri-match on Saturday beginning at 1:00. Shannon Hudson Head Volleyball Coach  CVCC vs. Wake Tech Community College Tuesday, October 5, 2010 Bucs Come Back To Beat Tech 3 to 2 Sets On Tuesday, October 5, 2010, the CVCC Lady Buccaneers Volleyball Team travelled to Raleigh for a 7:00 conference match against Wake Tech Community College. The Bucs were sluggish in the first game and lost 18-25. Communication issues continued into the second game resulting in a close loss of 24-26. The Bucs rebounded in the third game and dominated at the net winning with a commanding score of 25-14. Intensity continued into the fourth and fifth games for the Bucs and they came out on top with scores of 26-24 and 15-12. Leading the offensive game for the Bucs was Francesca Edgerton with 16 kills. Megan Clark added 11 kills. Carolyn Houser posted 23 assists. Erin Collins completed 29 serves and had 6 aces. Collins also led in the dig category with 17 for the match. Sarah Marshall had 14 digs, Darla Skidmore had 9, and Alannya Meroney contributed 8. On the block, Francesca Edgerton put down 6 blocks and Breckin Settlemyer had 4. The Bucs record is now 6-1 conference and 12-3 overall. CVCC- Falls to DCC 1 set to 3 The CVCC Lady Buccaneers travelled to Davidson County Community College for a tri-match Saturday, October 02, 2010 against Davidson CCC and Johnston CC. In the first match against Davidson, communication errors and inconsistency caused major problems for the Bucs and they lost the first two sets 19-25 and 11-25. "We weren’t talking or playing together as a team", reports Coach Shannon Hudson. "We were up and down all day and had a difficult time with consistent serving." The Bucs battled back in the third game and won it 25-21 before falling short in the fourth set 19-25. Francesca Edgerton led the team in kills with 11. Megan Clark added 8. Breckin Settlemyer led in the blocks category with 5 for the match. Carolyn Houser posted 20 assists. Defensively, Sarah Marshall had 13 digs, Erin Collins had 12, and Darla Skidmore added 9 more. CVCC Beats Johnston 3 sets to 1   CVCC rebounded and came out strong against Johnston Community College winning the first 2 sets 25-17 and 25-11. The Bucs slacked off in the third set and the Jaguars of JCC took advantage winning 25-23. The Bucs finished off the match with a 25-23 score in the fourth game. Kills were shared between Francesca Edgerton with 12, Megan Clark with 11, and Erin Collins with 8. Carolyn Houser put up 22 assists and Chelsea Stutesman added 14. In the dig category, libero Sarah Marshall led the way with 25. Erin Collins contributed 19 digs and Alannya Meroney had 9. The Lady Bucs travel to Wake Tech Community College on Tuesday, October 5th before hosting Johnson and Wales University at 7:00 on Thursday, October 7th for the kick off to their "Dig Pink" breast cancer awareness and support campaign. Bucs Come Back To Beat Tech 3 to 2 Sets

The CVCC Lady Bucs hosted Virginia-Western Community College for 7:00 match Thursday, September 30, 2010. The Bucs won in three with scores, 25-17, 25-12 and 25-19.

Carolyn Houser and Sarah Marshall led in serving with 4 aces each. Francesca Edgerton and Erin Collins added 3 aces each. Francesca Edgerton also led the team in kills with 9 for the match and Breckin Settlemyer had 6 kills and 4 block solos. Assists were shared between Carolyn Houser with 11, Caroline Vinesett with 7 and Chelsea Stutesman with 6. Leading the defense was libero Sarah Marshall with 8 digs. Chelsea Stutesman added 6 digs. The Bucs overall record is now 10-2, conference 4-1.

The Bucs travel to Davidson Community College on Saturday, October 2nd for a tri-match starting at 10:00. Their next home game is Thursday, October 7th against Johnson and Wales University at 7:00.

The Bucs will be raising awareness and support for breast cancer during the month of October with their "Dig Pink" campaign which will kick off on Thursday, October 7th. Special music and recognition of breast cancer survivors will be given attention during intermission between the second and third game of the match. All proceeds from Thursday’s match will support the "Dig Pink" breast cancer awareness campaign.

CVCC vs. Davidson County Community College Tuesday, September 28, 2010

The Lady Buccaneers of Catawba Valley Community College defeated Davidson County Community College Storm in a volleyball match on September 28, 2010 in four sets. In the first set, the Lady Bucs came out strong with a 7-0 lead, but lost momentum and the Lady Storm came out on top, winning 26-24. The Lady Bucs picked up their game and pulled through winning the next 3 sets, 25-19, 25-19 and 25-17.

Leading offensively for the Lady Bucs were Megan Clark with 2 aces and 8 kills, Breckin Settlemyer with 9 kills and Francesca Edgerton with 14 kills. Carolyn Houser also contributed with a whopping 35 assists. Sarah Marshall and Erin Collins paced the defense with 13 digs each. With the help of Francesca Edgerton and Breckin Settlemyer putting up a big block, the defense was unbreakable.

The Lady Bucs record is 9-2 overall and 4-1 conference. The Bucs host Virginia-Western on Thursday, September 30th in a 7:00 match before traveling back to Davidson on Saturday for a morning tri-match.

CVCC vs. Louisburg College Friday, September 24, 2010

The Catawba Valley Lady Buccaneers hosted Louisburg College for a 5:00 match Friday, September 24, 2010. The Bucs dominated the entire match winning in three with scores 25-7, 25-8, 25-17.

Leading hitters for the match were Francesca Edgerton with 10 kills and Megan Clark with 6. Erin Collins added 4 and Chelsea Stutesman had 2. Edgerton also led in the blocks category with 5 for the match and Breckin Settlemyer had 3. Carolyn Houser posted 14 assists and Chelsea Stutesman added 6 more. Caroline Vinesett also contributed with 2. Defense was consistent on the back row with libero Sarah Marshall leading the way with 7 for the match. Erin Collins and Alannya Meroney added 6 each. The serve game was on for the Bucs with Sarah Marshall posting 4 aces and Erin Collins and Francesca Edgerton putting down 3 more each. In the first game of the match Sarah Marshall served 14 in a row to lead her team to a huge win.

The Bucs travel to Toccoa Falls on Saturday, September 25th for a non-conference match. The Bucs record is 7-2 overall and 4-1 in conference play. Their next home game is Thursday, September 30th at 7:00 against Virginia Western Community College.

CVCC vs. Toccoa Falls College Saturday, September 25, 2010

The CVCC Lady Buccaneers played a competitive match against the Eagles of Toccoa Fall College in a 2:00 match Saturday, September 25, 2010. The first game was close, but the Bucs came out on top, winning 26-24. The Eagles rebounded in the second game, taking an early lead, and the Bucs couldn’t recover, losing 18-25. CVCC refocused in the third game and used consistent, aggressive serving as the driving force to win 25-17. The Bucs kept their momentum going and won the final game 25-20.

Leading the way in the serving category was Carolyn Houser with 6 aces, Megan Clark had 4 and Alannya Meroney, Francesca Edgerton, and Sarah Marshall had 3 aces each. Breckin Settlemyer had a season high 10 kills for the match with Francesca Edgerton adding 9 more. Megan Clark and Erin Collins had 6 and 4 kills respectively.

Breckin Settlemyer also dominated on the block with 9 block assists and 1 block solo. Aleisha Gentry had 4 block assists. Carolyn Houser and Chelsea Stutesman shared set assists with 16 and 7 respectively. Libero Sarah Marshall led the defensive team with 11 digs. Erin Collins and Alannya Meroney added 10 each and Darla Skidmore had 5.

The Bucs travel to Davidson Community College on Tuesday, September 28th before hosting Virginia-Western on Thursday, September 30th at 7:00. The Bucs record is 4-1 conference and 8-2 overall.

CVCC vs. Piedmont Baptist Tuesday, September 21, 2010

The Lady Buccaneers of Catawba Valley Community College came out hot against the Conquerors of Piedmont Baptist at a match in Winston-Salem on Tuesday, September 21, 2010.

Consistent serving in the first and third game and an aggressive offense were keys to the Buc’s success. Leading the serve was setter Carolyn Houser who completed 13 and put down 3 aces. Houser also had 21 assists for the night. Kills were spread evenly with Megan Clark posting 8 and Erin Collins and Francesca Edgerton adding 6 each.
