New Classes--Spring 2010

HIS 221 African-American History
African-American history from the Colonial period to the present. Part of the “Hands On History” project, the course is presented in conjunction with the CVCC Office of Multicultural Affairs and the CVCC Foundation, Inc.  During Spring Break (March 4-7) the class will travel to Selma, Ala., for the 45th anniversary of "Bloody Sunday," which interrupted the 1965 Civil Rights march to Montgomery.  Seats are restricted.

CHI 111 Introductory Chinese MWF 11:00-11:50 am
CHI 181 Introductory Chinese Lab T/TH 11:00-11:50 am

This course introduces the fundamental elements of the Chinese language within a cultural context. Emphasis is placed on the development of basic listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. Upon completion, students should be able to comprehend and respond with grammatical accuracy to spoken and written Chinese and demonstrate cultural awareness.

ENG 235 Survey of Film as Literature
This course provides a study of the medium of film with a focus on the historical impact and the various literary genres of movies. Emphasis is placed on an appreciation of film as a form of literature which demonstrates various elements of fiction (character, setting, theme, etc.). Upon completion, students should be able to analyze film critically in various literary contexts.
Prerequisites: ENG 113
Corequisites: None

ENG 125 Creative Writing I
This course is designed to provide students with the opportunity to practice the art of creative writing. Emphasis is placed on writing, fiction, poetry, and sketches. Upon completion, students should be able to craft and critique their own writing and critique the writing of others.
Prerequisites: ENG 111
Corequisites: ENG 112, ENG 113, or ENG 114

MUS 111 Fundamentals of Music Theory
A new music fundamentals course focuses on composing music is an ideal introduction to music theory, especially if you have no previous musical experience.  You’ll use world percussion instruments, such as African drums and marimba-like instruments, along with more conventional instruments of Western music, such as guitar and piano.

DRA 135 Acting for the Camera
This course does not fulfill a Humanities requirement, but does serve as an elective or as a pre-major course for anyone wishing to transfer to a four-year institution and major in drama/theatre.
