FINE and applied ARTS
Catawba Valley Community College's Music Program is recognized throughout the state university system for having produced award winning singers nearly every year since it's inception in 1991. More than half of our students have been offered scholarships to continue their education at four-year institutions.
CVCC offers an Associate in Fine Arts Degree in music. The 65 semester-hour program prepares students to transfer as a junior to most four-year institutions and all state colleges and universities. The degree alone prepares students to assume the duties of a part-time music minister in a local church, or an assistant director in a larger choral program.
At degree completion, students should have 36 hours of music credits and 29 hours of standard core required courses.
An interview with the Music Program director is recommended the semester before you intend to enroll. Students must pass a pitch perception test to qualify as a music major.
Some music majors will be allowed to give a 30-minute sophomore recital in the spring of their sophomore year. Students may choose to join with a friend to do a joint recital of one hour by request of their teacher.
Music majors are required to attend all recitals, including general recitals held once every semester and recitals by visiting artists. All students studying voice or an instrument will be given the opportunity to perform at least once in the school year at recital. Master classes are offered regularly by most instructors at no extra charge to the student.
