Business Leaders Coach Students for Job Interviewing Competition

Several members of Catawba Valley Community College’s SkillsUSA Chapter recently received job interview coaching from local business professionals in preparation for the state SkillsUSA competition to be held in April in Greensboro.

Nine students participated in mock interviews, giving them experience in creating and presenting a resume, dressing professionally, and practicing interviewing skills. The students gained valuable feedback from industry leaders.

Students who successfully completed the World of Work course and the job interviewing scenarios include Bradley Aldridge, Amber Brooks, Matthew Brooks, Crystal Hewitt, Jonathan Deal, Fabiola Sanchez, Kimberly Shue, Gioia Larkin and Kelsie Lawter.
Interviewers included Allen Hester, district general manager of Canteen Services; John Wiley, president of Concept Frames; and David Philips, retired banking executive and consultant.

The World of Work business preparation course was facilitated by Nicole Whitehead, Business Department faculty member and SkillsUSA advisor.

The CVCC team hopes to bring home more state and national trophies this year. Last year, the CVCC SkillsUSA team won the State Championship in Job Interviewing, Customer Service, Public Speaking and Entrepreneurship. At the national championship in Kansas City, the team placed first in Entrepreneurship, second in Customer Service, seventh in Job Interviewing and Eleventh in Public Speaking.
