Bascones Receives Porter Scholarship from CVCC Foundation

Cindy Bascones was recently awarded the Brian R. Porter Memorial Scholarship through the CVCC Foundation, Inc.

The scholarship honors the memory and career of Porter who served as a deputy sheriff for the Gallia County Sheriff’s Office in Gallia County, Ohio. The scholarship was founded last year by Porter’s friend and Catawba Valley Community College faculty member Kristy Wooten to benefit students pursuing a career in criminal justice or law enforcement.

Bascones is enrolled in CVCC’s Criminal Justice Technology Latent Evidence associate degree program. A native of Peru, she grew up in New York City and became a U.S. citizen in 2000, and moved to North Carolina in 2005. She is a work/study student in the Office of Multicultural Affairs where she assists the coordinator of Minority Males on the Move and serves on the organizing committee for the annual Multicultural Series of events.

Bascones has been named to the Honors List every semester she has been enrolled. She will graduate this May and plans to continue her studies in law enforcement at Lees-McRae College to become a private investigator.

The mission of the CVCC Foundation, Inc. is to foster and promote the growth, progress, and welfare of CVCC. For more information on giving, contact Teresa Biggs, executive director of the CVCC Foundation, Inc., 828-327-7000, ext. 4288,
