Miller & Lawing Receive SECU Scholarships

The North Carolina State Employees’ Credit Union (SECU) Foundation recently presented Continuing Education Scholarships to two Catawba Valley Community College students.

The scholarships are part of a statewide initiative to meet the needs of the state’s unemployed and underemployed citizens. Short-term job training to develop new careers or retrain to advance current job skills are provided through the N.C. Community College System’s NC Back to Work program.

Perry Miller and Mark A. Lawing, both of Maiden, received a $750 continuing education scholarship to earn credentials as a World Instructor Training Institute Certified Personal Fitness Trainer.

The eight-week course includes 62 hours of training, including 16 hours of lecture, 16 hours of hands on practical training and a 30-hour internship that networks graduates right into the job market. The course teaches biomechanics, exercise physiology, fitness testing, equipment usage and health assessment. The World Instructor Training Institute is the only major certifying body in the country providing comprehensive practical training and internship components.

Miller is also enrolled in CVCC’s Mechanical Engineering Technology associate degree program and completing additional continuing education credits in Mechantronics. He served three years in the Army.

Lawing plans to launch a part-time business as a personal trainer after completing his certification. Formerly enlisted in the Army, he wants to use his passion for physical fitness and sports to enhance the performance of other athletes.
