Students Receive SECU Foundation Scholarships


    
The North Carolina State Employees’ Credit Union (SECU) Foundation recently presented its first Continuing Education Scholarships to 10 Catawba Valley Community College students.

The scholarships are part of a statewide initiative to meet the needs of the state’s unemployed and underemployed citizens. Short-term job training to develop new careers or retrain to advance current job skills are provided through the N.C. Community College System’s NC Back to Work program.

Recipients of a $750 continuing education scholarship include Jason W. Cole of Hickory, Certified Production Technician-MSSC Certified Production Technician; Mary Corpening of Hickory, Office Professional for the Workplace-Certified Administrative Professional; Lois A. Elliott of Claremont, Office Professional for the Workplace-Certified Administrative Professional; Tanisha R. England of Conover, Certified Production Technician-MSSC Certified Production Technician; Juanita Greene of Hickory, Office Professional for the Workplace-Certified Administrative Professional; Debra McMillian of Hickory, Office Professional for the Workplace-Certified Administrative Professional; Dean S. Shore of Hiddenite, Certified Production Technician-MSSC Certified Production Technician; Mary L. Weatherman of Hickory, Office Professional for the Workplace-Certified Administrative Professional; David E. Welch of Taylorsville, Certified Production Technician-MSSC Certified Production Technician; and Kenneth E. Wright of Newton, Six Sigma Green Belt-MSSC Certified Production Technician.

All scholarship recipients also completed CVCC’s Human Resources Development Career Skills for Back to Work, which includes 48 hours of classroom instruction on critical employability skills.

Cole, Shore, Welch and Wright also received scholarships from CVCC’s Dream-Believe-Achieve Scholars Program. These scholarships were established to assist both college credit and continuing education students with tuition assistance after all financial aid is applied.
