Math Team 3rd in University of N. Georgia Math Tournament

A team of nine Catawba Valley Community College students recently placed third overall in the University of North Georgia Math Tournament, the premier calculus contest in the southeastern United States.

Team members included Thomas Beasley, Cameron Wellborn, David Fox, Russell Emerson, Zachary Badertscher, David Marhao, Ashley Kannenberg, Michael Wilkins and Joshua Padilla.

Coached by math faculty members Vasilica Marhao and Jonathan Loss, the CVCC team competed with 20 different schools in North Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi and Florida.

Out of 175 students, Padilla finished in a tie for fifth place on the individual exam. The team of Padilla, Russell Emerson, and David Marhao earned second place among 37 competing teams in the problem-solving portion of the competition.

The competition features both individual and team events involving problems from calculus, trigonometry, geometry, statistics and algebra. The tournament is an all-day event held at the UNG campus in Gainesville, Ga.

Students enrolled in a two-year or four-year college which offers a two year mathematics degree, who have never been enrolled in any math course above the sophomore level, are eligible to participate.
