GED Changes Ahead: "Finish What You Started"

Catawba Valley Community College is preparing for several major changes in the GED tests scheduled to take effect next January, according to the college’s Basic Skills director Chanell Morello.

Changes will align the test with state common core standards to ensure adults earning a high school equivalency can also demonstrate readiness for college-level work and career training programs.

“Our biggest challenge right now is to encourage students who have taken some of the GED tests, but have not passed every part, to come in and finish,” said Morello. “They have until the end of 2013 to pass all five tests. Otherwise, their scores will no longer be valid, and they will have to start over with the new 2014 GED Test. We definitely don’t want that to happen.”

Instructors at the CVCC East Campus and in all their community locations are encouraging current students to set personal goals to complete all portions by December 31. Staff members are in the process of contacting former students who have not yet finished the tests. However, many students have moved and the college has no way of contacting them.

“We’re relying on people in the community to help us get the word out,” said Morello.

Another change involves cost. The one-time testing fee increased January 1 from $25 to $35. The fee is expected to increase again in 2014, but the exact cost has not been determined by the testing service administrator. There is no charge for re-testing.

In addition, GED tests will be transitioning from paper-based to computer-based tests. In a world where most 21st century jobs require familiarity with, this demonstrates that GED graduates are computer proficient.

CVCC’s Basic Skills Department is available to help adults earn their GED. For information on classes available on campus and in the community, visit www.cvcc.edu/GED.
