Several students attending Catawba Valley Community College recently participated in the annual North Carolina Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges Calculus Competition held at Gaston College.

Consisting of Calculus I and II students, the team competed in individual heats and an afternoon group component. The team finished third place in the competition.

Team members include Rhys-Paul Annas, Jacob Archambault, Mathew Fisher, David Marhao, Joshua Padilla, Ashley Rannenberg, Cameron Wellborn and Vasiliy Sakhonenko. The top three CVCC participants in the individual competition were Padilla, Rannenberg and Marhao.

Joshua Padillia finished fourth out of 52 individual competitors. Last year, he finished second place. During the 2011-12 academic year, Padilla also finished second in North Carolina for the Student Math League Competition. This national competition is held in two parts in the fall and spring and has thousands of participants. With Padilla on the team, CVCC also team placed third in last year’s Gainesville College South-Eastern Annual Mathematics Competition.
