Training for Long-Term Unemployed

Catawba Valley Community College will offer the first general information sessions Oct. 9 and 10 for its NC Back-to-Work initiative to assist the long-term unemployed with training for new careers.

NC Back-to-Work provides state grant funded job training and retraining in technical education areas; employability skills, including the NC Career Readiness Certificate; and third-party, industry-recognized credentials through June 30, 2013.

Information sessions will be offered Oct. 9 from 9 to 11 a.m. and 2 to 4 p.m., and Oct. 10 from 10 a.m. to noon in Room 975 of the CVCC East Campus located at 2760 Highway 70 SE in Hickory.  Additional information sessions will be scheduled.

Those who have received unemployment insurance for 26 weeks or more are eligible, plus anyone who has exhausted their unemployment benefits are eligible to apply for this program.

Retraining program participants receive job training in technical education areas, employability skills, and job placement assistance with the opportunity to earn the NC Career Readiness Certificate and third-party, industry-recognized credentials.

The program offers short term training that qualifies completers for rapidly changing positions in industry. It helps completers to gain additional skills to become more competitive in our rapidly changing job market, according to grant coordinator Donna Gilbert.

“We’re hearing from industry that they need people, but the skills required have changed,” said Gilbert. “Manufacturing is more advanced than it was 10 to 15 years ago and requires workers who are familiar with computers and other automated equipment. Those who have been chronically unemployed can get that kind of training with us.”
