Moorer Receives President's Award

Mary Moorer, a 2012 graduate of Catawba Valley Community College’s Architectural Technology program, recently received the 2012 President’s Award.

The Hickory resident was described by nominator’s as “the ideal student, dedicated to submitting quality projects, using innovative approaches to solutions and never satisfied with the status quo.”

“For Mary, it is not good enough just to get the job done,” said her faculty advisor and Architectural Technology Program Department Head Lynn Preslar.

Following a growing trend in higher education, Moorer, who had already earned a bachelor’s degree in marketing from Francis Marion University in Florence, S.C., decided to enroll at CVCC. After being laid off from a job as a staffing specialist, she realized she needed focused training to pursue her career goals.

She was instrumental in helping establish the Architectural Technology Club at CVCC, and served as the club’s first president. She has represented the club, the architectural technology curriculum, and the college through her networking with the Home Builders Association of Catawba Valley and the American Institute of Architects, all while maintaining a 4.0 grade point average.

She is a member of Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society, was a Rotary Student of the Month and received the 2012 Architectural Technology Student Award. She represented the ATC at the President’s Interclub Council meetings and was a work-study student for the engineering technologies programs.

A resident of Hickory for the past 15 years, Moorer is active in the community volunteering with Habitat for Humanity and her church, plus lots of time helping friends in difficult situations.
