Last Teens Behind the Wheel Class July 26 & 28

Prepare your teen for safer driving by enrolling him or her in Catawba Valley Community College’s popular “Teens Behind the Wheel” program this summer.

New drivers age 14 to 17 are taught safe driving principles in the three-hour classroom section. They also practice the skills they learn in five hours of behind-the-wheel instruction on a controlled driving course.

All instruction takes place on the CVCC main campus on Highway 70 SE in Hickory over two days. One parent is asked to attend and must provide a car for the driving skills portion of the class on the second day.

Students will practice curve and ramp driving, distance judgment, parallel parking, effects of drugs on driving ability and safe passing techniques. The class also covers pre-trip vehicle inspection, safety belts and airbags, proper backing using mirrors, stopping distances, vehicle maneuvering techniques and visual scanning techniques.

The last of three sections has seats available. The two-day experience includes a three-hour classroom portion on Thursday, July 26, from 9 a.m. to noon and five hours on the driving range on Saturday, July 28, from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m.:

The registration fee is $70. Preregistration and prepayment are required.
