Wooten Establishes Porter Scholarship

The Brian R. Porter Memorial Scholarship was recently established through the CVCC Foundation, Inc.

Created to benefit students pursuing a career in criminal justice or law enforcement, the scholarship was established by his friend and CVCC faculty Kristy Wooten. The scholarship honors the memory of Porter who served as a deputy sheriff for the Gallia County Sheriff’s Office in Gallia County, Ohio.

Born and raised on the Tuscorora Indian Reservation in upstate New York, Porter completed his education at Hocking College in Ohio. He pursued a career in law enforcement, serving as a narcotics officer and serving on a crimes task force. He was also involved in training new officers and was a key investigative leader in the Gallia County Prosecutor’s Office in felony investigations. He also worked as an undercover deputy.

The first $500 scholarship was awarded to Sarah Mayes who is enrolled in CVCC’s Criminal Justice Technology associate degree program specializing in latent evidence and cyber crime technologies. She is a member of Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society and has maintained a grade point average of 4.0 since her enrollment in fall 2009.

Mayes intends to transfer to a four-year institution and pursue a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice. She hopes to pursue a career as a criminal investigator specializing in intelligence analysis.

Mayes is an active member of Center United Methodist Church in Catawba and serves as a children’s Sunday school teacher and member of the Safe Sanctuary Program. She is a Cub Scout leader and facilitator of a support group for women recovering from all forms of sexual violence.

The mission of the CVCC Foundation, Inc. is to foster and promote the growth, progress, and welfare of CVCC. Following are photos of groups of students chosen for this year’s scholarships.
