Asian Style Wheel Throwing Workshop April 14

The Potters’ Workshop will hold a one-day workshop on “Asian Style Wheel Throwing” on Sat., Apr. 14, from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., featuring guest instructor and ceramic artist Po-Wen Liu.

“Asian Style Wheel Throwing” is designed for students with all levels of expertise and those interested in expanding their pottery techniques. The workshop will demonstrate Asian style techniques on the potter’s wheel to create bowls, large platters, vases and jars. It will encompass altering and decorating wheel thrown pieces directly on the potter’s wheel and how to efficiently throw well-fit lids.

Liu is from Taiwan, R.O.C. Prior to moving to the United States, he majored in ceramic engineering and worked at a Chinese porcelain company in Taipei, Taiwan, as a ceramic engineer. Liu received a bachelor of fine arts from the Rochester Institute of Technology, and a master of fine arts from the Northern Illinois University. He currently teaches ceramics at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. His work has been included in several exhibitions, including the Art Museum Gallery in Chicago and the Green Hill Center for North Carolina Art in Greensboro. Additionally, Liu was a manuscript consultant for the 2002 Newbery Medal awarded book, "A Single Shard" by Linda Sue Park, regarding the making of celadon wares.

Open to the public, the workshop is $75 per person, and lunch is included.
