Author Silas House Reads on Campus March 20 & 21

Catawba Valley Community College’s Department of Developmental English and Reading will host prize winning author Silas House for campus readings on March 20 and 21.

The March 20 reading will be held at 7 p.m. in the Student Center commons area.

Prior to the March 21 reading, House will sign books beginning at 10 a.m. The reading will begin at 11 a.m. in the Tarlton Complex (formerly Multipurpose Complex). Both readings are open to the public.

More than 600 students enrolled in developmental reading and English are reading House’s “Eli the Good,” published in 2009 and winner of the first Storylines Prize. It has been described as “a tender and profound look at the complexities of childhood, at the problems and power of being different, and the realities of war…”

House has authored three other novels, two plays, a creative nonfiction book and another young adult novel that is due out this year.

House is a two-time winner of the Kentucky Novel of the Year, a two-time finalist for the Southern Book Critics Circle Prize, the Appalachian Writer of the Year, the Appalachian Book of the Year, the Chaffin Prize for Literature, the Award for Special Achievement from the Fellowship of Southern Writers, and many other honors.

House serves as the National Endowment for the Humanities Chair in Appalachian Studies at Berea College in his native Kentucky and on the fiction faculty at Spalding University’s master’s in fine arts in creative writing program.
