Multipurpose Complex Renamed Tarlton Complex

The CVCC Foundation, Inc., recently received the largest single private gift in the college’s 53-year history, according to CVCC President Dr. Garrett D. Hinshaw. As a result of a gift from area business leader James V. Tarlton, Jr., the college is renaming its multipurpose athletic and event venue The Tarlton Complex in his honor. The gift amount is undisclosed.

“I am supporting Catawba Valley Community College through this gift to the CVCC Foundation because I believe that our community college holds the solution to our economic situation,” said Tarlton, who is a successful area real estate developer. “I also feel that education provides people with opportunity and hope for their future.  The training provided and the graduates are the backbone of our workforce. I hope this gift will influence others to support the college as I do.”

David Sain, chairman of the CVCC Foundation board of directors and a CVCC alumnus, accepted the gift on behalf of the Foundation.

“Jim has been a dedicated member of the CVCC Foundation board for nearly two decades,” said Sain. “His business expertise has been invaluable helping the Foundation acquire real estate that has expanded the college campus exponentially. This gift will have a major impact on the college. It sets a wonderful example.”

Tarlton joined the CVCC Foundation board in 1991 and has served on the executive committee, property committee and as vice chairman. During his tenure, the college acquired 37 acres. Those tracts include the CVCC East Campus and the plot on which the CVCC Business & Industry Training Complex rests.

“Mr. Tarlton's many gifts of time, talent and treasure are priceless,” said CVCC President Garrett D. Hinshaw. “Incredible things are happening at CVCC with the support of champions like Jim. We are grateful for his generosity.” Hinshaw added that the gift was given without restricted purposes.

Tarlton’s recent gift is actually his second at a naming opportunity level. A second floor classroom in the Tarlton Complex bears the name of Judith and James Tarlton, Jr. Classroom as a result of a gift given during the CVCC Partnership 2000 Campaign conducted by the CVCC Foundation.

The mission of the CVCC Foundation, Inc. is to foster and promote the growth, progress, and welfare of CVCC. For more information on giving opportunities, contact Teresa Biggs, executive director of the CVCC Foundation, Inc., 828-327-7000, ext. 4288,
