Dental Students From Universidad Popular Autonoma del Estado de Puebla Visit

Catawba Valley Community College recently hosted a group of dental students from the Universidad  Popular Autonoma del Estado de Puebla (Puebla, Mexico). Their goal was to observe the functioning of the clinic and dental hygiene students.  Mexico does not have dental hygienists; dentists perform all oral prophylaxis and preventive treatment in there.

Their visit provided them with a better perspective on the value of dental hygienist in the United States and allowed them to see first-hand the type of care that dental hygienists can provide. They also were able to see and operate dental equipment and materials with which they are not familiar.

The students were accompanied by faculty member Dr. Erika Chimal, graduate of the University of Michigan School of Dentistry; and Rachel VandenEnde, an intern with the Community Outreach Program through the Appalachian Regional Healthcare System in Boone. VandenEnde was instrumental in setting up the visit.

Embracing the college’s Strategic Plan to create global partnerships, CVCC plans to continue its relationship with the dental school at the Universidad Popular Autonoma del Estado de Puebla.
