EMS Alumnus Presented "Backboard Award"

Cary Shook, a 1990 graduate of Catawba Valley Community College’s Emergency Medical Science (paramedic) associate degree program, was one of two Catawba County paramedics who recently received the Backboard Award by Carolinas HealthCare System’s MedCenter Air team.

The Backboard Award is given quarterly to a health-care provider or group that demonstrates the EMS core values and beliefs for their community and/or functions above the call of duty in times of crisis.

Shook and Shannon Eckard, both of whom work as EMT-paramedics for Catawba County EMS, were recognized for their expertise in responding to a traumatic injury from a boating accident. “Their excellent pre-hospital care helped us better assess and care for the patient after being airlifted,” said Abby Walden, outreach coordinator for MedCenter Air.

Shook also serves as a preceptor for other EMS students at CVCC and is a member of the college’s EMS advisory board.

MedCenter Air offers comprehensive critical care transport services through a fleet of vehicles, including fixed-wing aircraft, helicopters and grand ambulances. It provides the region with an extension of services provided by Carolinas Medical Center, rapid transport to the most appropriate hospital, and serves as a secondary responder for regional emergency medical services in 28-county area in North and South Carolina.
