Seuss Political Cartoons on Exhibit Through August

Catawba Valley Community College’s library is hosting a special traveling exhibit of “Dr. Seuss Wants You!” a political cartoon series created by Theodor Geisel from 1941-42.

The exhibit is on display now through the end of August in the library, which is located on the second floor of the Cuyler A. Dunbar Bldg. on the main campus in Hickory.

Sponsored by the North Carolina Council on the Holocaust, the traveling exhibit has been made available at no charge. The exhibit includes 14 panels, each of which highlights one of Seuss’s political cartoons against fascism, anti-Semitism and bigotry, published in PM, a New York daily newspaper.

Most Americans know Seuss only for his “Cat in the Hat” and the “Whos of Who-ville.”  Before Theodor Geisel achieved fame for his unconventional children’s books, he drew political cartoons for PM, a left-wing daily newspaper in New York. Like most of Seuss’s later works, these cartoons educate as they entertain.

The public is invited to visit Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m. through July 28. Beginning Aug. 1, the library will be open Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m. and Friday from 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m.

For more information, contact librarian Staci Wilson at 828-327-7000, ext. 4525, or swilson@cvcc.edu.

Pictured viewing the exhibit are (from left) students Uzma Naz (healthcare management), April Harper (Associate in Arts) and Michelle Henley (Associate in Arts).
