Summerscapes Camps for Kids Week of June 20
Enrollment is under way at Catawba Valley Community College for Summerscapes 2011. Kids ages 5 to 17 can sign up for week-long, special-interest classes through August. Classes are divided into age groups begin each Monday and end on Thursday unless otherwise noted.
Subjects include arts and crafts, sports, music, photography, computer skills and much more. The fee for a single class is $60 unless otherwise specified. For a complete list of offerings, visit www.cvcc.edu/Summerscapes.
Summerscapes classes offered June 20 - June 23
Adventures in Reading - 8:30 to noon, for rising 1st and 2nd graders. Students will read great books and work on interesting projects, discovering the love of reading while having fun. The instructor is Delona Balis.
Art Explosion - 1 to 4:30 p.m., for rising 4th and 5th graders. Students will explore art through different mediums and have fun using their imagination to create various projects. The instructor is Tania Sherrill.
Beginning Golf - 8:30 a.m. to noon, for ages 9 - 12. Students will learn the basics in a fun group atmosphere. Emphasis will be on the fundamental of the swing including the grip, stance, posture, various shot techniques and golf etiquette. The instructor is Jeff Toney. The cost of the class is $70.
Cooking Up A Storm - 8:30 a.m. to noon, for rising 4th - 6th graders. Students will learn to be comfortable in the kitchen and gain useful cooking skills. Students will prepare fun foods using a variety of ingredients and eat the treats made in class. The instructor is Patty Shuford. The cost of the class is $65.
Crochet is Fun - 8:30 a.m. to noon, for ages 8-11. Students will learn 3 basic crochet stitches-chain stitch, single crochet and double crochet while learning how to read a simple crochet pattern. The instructor is Leigh Anna Thrower and the class will be held at the CVCC Alexander Campus.
Digital Photography - 8:30 a.m. to noon, for rising 6th-8th graders. This class introduces students to digital photography, image manipulation, photographic techniques, camera operation and editing using software program Photoshop will be covered. Students must have their own digital camera. The instructor is M. Dawn Crouse. The cost of the class is $70.
Graphic Design Basics - 8:30 a.m. to noon, for rising 6th-8th graders. Students will learn the basics of graphic design including color, patterns, and principles and elements of design in this hands-on class. The instructor is Jan Houser.
Math Adventures - 8:30 a.m. - noon, for rising 3rd and 4th graders. Students will explore math concepts through math games and other fun activities. Concepts reviewed will include geometry, multiplication and division facts and fractions. The instructor will be Tania Sherrill.
Mega-Fun Math Skills - 1:00 - 4:30 p.m., for rising 1st and 2nd graders. Students will be involved in fun activities through reading, math and geography building a solid understanding of globes and maps. The instructor will be Delona Balis.
Trash to Treasure - 8:30 a.m. - noon, for rising 5th and 6th graders. Students will go green in this class learning to create four projects with items that would normally be thrown away. Students will need to bring an old t-shirt, two empty soda cans, plastic bottle lids and an old pair of jeans. The instructor is Liz Cronan and the class will be held at CVCC’s Alexander Campus.
