Simmons & Roberts Awarded Duke Energy Scholarships

Michael Simmons and Chiara Roberts, students at Catawba Valley Community College, were each awarded scholarships by Duke Energy of $2,500 through the CVCC Foundation.

An Alexander County resident, Roberts is a 2009 graduate of Alexander Central High School taking prerequisite courses at CVCC to enter the nursing program. She graduated 6th in her class of 353. She is active with her church and works as a nanny while maintaining a 4.0 grade point average. Her ultimate career goal is to earn a master’s degree in nursing to become a nurse practitioner.

Simmons became a college student last year after working more than 20 years in the furniture industry. He is majoring in web technologies and maintains a 3.8 grade point average. During spring break this semester, Simmons traveled with his emerging technologies class to Switzerland where they toured CERN and the United Nations.

He is active in the Emerging Entrepreneurs Club and plans on graduating in December and pursuing a job in web technology. He and his wife, Marty, have two children and live in Taylorsville.

“The service area of Catawba Valley Community College has experienced double-digit unemployment rates,” said Teresa Biggs, executive director of the CVCC Foundation.  “Assisting students with their financial needs helps to increase the educational attainment rate in the community.  Scholarships not only impact the student but the families and future generations of the student.”

The CVCC Foundation, Inc. is a nonprofit corporation with the mission to foster and promote the growth, progress, and general welfare of CVCC.  For additional information about investing in students, contact Teresa Biggs, CVCC Foundation executive director at 828-327-7000, ext. 4288, tbiggs@cvcc.edu, or visit www.cvcc.edu/About_Us/CVCC_Foundation/.
